The history of the Paris Catacombs or (Les Catacombes de Paris) starts in the late 18th century. There was a public health problem tied to the cities cemeteries which led to the decision of moving the cites underground. Paris authorities chose a cite (that at the time) was easily accessible, located outside the capital. It was the former Tombe-Issorie quarries under the plain of Montrouge. It was in operation since the fifteenth century and then abandoned. These quarries were just a small part of the labyrinth extending under the city approximately 800 hectares.
