The quantity and quality of the microbiomes in a patient's stomach can determine the effectiveness of their cancer treatment. In this episode, Daniel Spakowicz, PhD, a researcher in the OSUCCC - James Division of Mdical Oncology, explains how everyone's gut contains trillions of bacterial cells. By analyzing a patient's fecal sample, scientists can determine the genetic makeup of their microbiomes, and are in the early stages of learning how to alter and change it to make immunotherapy treatment more effective, which in turn will extend and save lives. "This research is very exciting and has tremendous potential," Spakowicz says.
