This program will discuss Chronic Kidney Disease. This activity provides primary care physicians with an evidence-based update on the screening, risk stratification, and pharmacologic management of chronic kidney disease. Learners will review the latest clinical trial data and guideline recommendations — including the KDIGO 2024 guideline, the 2025 VA/DoD CKD guideline, and the ADA 2026 Standards of Care — with emphasis on the practical application of SGLT2 inhibitors, GLP-1 receptor agonists, and nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) in the primary care setting.

This program will discuss Medical Communication & Conflict Management. This presentation equips clinicians with practical strategies for effective communication in challenging clinical encounters. Learners will develop skills to convey empathy, strengthen patient relationships, and prevent, de-escalate, and respond to conflict. A structured communication framework applicable to serious illness conversations and difficult interactions—such as delivering bad news or addressing an angry, dismissed patient—will be introduced. Through recorded cases, participants will practice applying the framework and leave with actionable steps to integrate these techniques into everyday clinical practice.

This program will discuss Antibiotic Update. New antibiotics have been approved by the FDA over the past couple of years and new research has helped shape guidelines to reduce antibiotic duration as well as selection in certain cases. This update will provide insight into antimicrobial options for common infections in our community including for urinary tract infections, c difficile, skin and soft tissue infections, and pneumonia.

This program will discuss Lipid Management. This presentation is meant to help attendees be able to identify patients at increased ASCVD risk, risk stratify patients with dyslipidemia and apply treatment recommendations from the dyslipidemia guidelines for both primary and secondary prevention patients. The objective of the second half of this presentation will be to familiarize prescribers with available antihyperlipidemics.

This program will discuss Preventive Cardiology. Learners will familiarize themselves with the AHA PREVENT risk scoring model, which has replaced the prior Pooled Cohort Equations-based model in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk prediction. Risk-based decisions regarding performance of additional atherosclerotic screening tools and treatment decisions will be examined. Lipid-lowering therapy goals are based on the risk estimate informed by demographic factors, laboratory testing, and imaging (e.g. coronary artery calcium score) results. This presentation reviews the literature surrounding lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) as a cardiovascular risk factor, including its genetic determinants, structure, and atherogenic mechanisms. Learners will explore the atherogenic mechanisms of Lp(a), its genetic determinants, along with contemporary and future management strategies for elevated Lp(a). The talk will also address the evolving role of aspirin in primary prevention, and the use of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) in assessing atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk.
