Alex Murdaugh was once a powerful personal injury attorney from a prominent legal family in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. For nearly a century, the Murdaugh name carried influence in the region’s legal system — but in 2021, that legacy unraveled in shocking fashion.

On June 7, 2021, Alex’s wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and their youngest son, Paul Murdaugh, were found shot to death at the family’s rural estate in Islandton, South Carolina.
