As Durham’s prosecution of Former Clinton Campaign lawyer Michael Sussman begins, an interesting legal angle from Durham’s team has developed.
At the start of opening arguments, Durham’s team presented what they called “a look, a leap, and a lie” theory of the case. According to Durham, Sussmann and his team of Clinton operatives first “looked” at the Trump Russia data, then Sussmann “leaped” by trying to get friendly media outlets such as the New York Times and Slate Magazine to publish the Alfa Bank allegations. When that failed, Sussmann “lied” by taking the fabricated Alfa Bank data directly to the FBI himself.
Sussmann knew that a direct approach to James Baker, his long-time friend, and senior FBI legal counsel would garner attention within the FBI that Sussmann had been after.
But actions taken by FBI leadership tell a somewhat different story. The FBI was not “duped.” They were deeply complicit in the larger Trump-Russia collusion affair.
