Eps 141: Guest Michael Jimenez - Latin American Theology / Colonialization

Listen Later

Cristobal Colon sailed the ocean blue in 1492. He is commonly known by that name in Spain–where the words like colony, colonizer, colonial, colonel, and related words come from. In the United States his arrived to this hemisphere is celebrated on Columbus Day. He is known here as Christopher Columbus.

The conquest by Spain and Portugal and later by France, the Dutch, and the British, was a cultural, political, religious, and human genocide for the indigenous people already living in these lands. The empires from Europe filled their treasuries off the salve labor, stolen riches, and resources of others and also used religion to conquer as well.

Today, my guest Michael Jimenez talks about some theologians from Latin America that emerged during the decolonization period of the 20th Century. They are commonly known as Liberation Theologians.

What many of us have often been told is Theology (proper) is really a contextualized Euro-centric theology of Empire that treats other, even biblically-based ideas, and merely contextualized forms.

I hope our conversation will open you up to a new way of thinking about theologically and politically marginalized lies, voices, and stories. Thank you for spreading this important episode around to friends and others!
