"There are so many new platforms that are popping up these days. The newest brokers focus on US stocks. So now we've got a whole bunch of zero brokerage, US trading platforms out there. You might have seen eToro, we've got Stake, which launched a couple of years ago - that was the first in Australia to launch zero brokerage trading. So that's very low fees and you can invest smaller amounts with US stocks. They tend to be focused towards that kind of younger audience, that kind of Wall StreetBets audience that we see in the US. The Robin Hood investors where it's very minimalist design offering quick trades on your phone. They tend to be optimised for mobile, and that's the angle they tend to push. You want to trade GameStop or, or Facebook or whatever, you can make a quick trade so fast."

Andrew is the founder and managing director of Strawman.com an online investors club which shares independent share market research and recommendations between Australia’s best private investors. With 11,000 current active members it is a thriving community of investors who compete against one another based on performance and community endorsement. Andrew has worked in financial markets for over 20 years, with experience as an equity’s investor and a market commentator.
Following are some questions that he believes that not only should be thought about, but written down before any share purchase:
Write down your thoughts when you’re researching a company and you will become a much better informed investor and you’ll have much higher levels of conviction. It will mean that when share prices inevitably fall you can judge whether something is fundamentally wrong with the business or the fall is due to other factors.

Australia is a world leader and innovator in the Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) space. I'm joined today by Michael Eidel of Openpay ASX:OPY. Everyone has heard about Afterpay but it's worth noting that there are other players in this sector. Openpay partners with merchants to allow for customers to spread their payments over time at zero interest. It’s headquartered in Australia and its services are available here, in New Zealand and most recently the UK. It was founded in 2013 with Michael taking up the role of CEO since 2019. Michael talks about his previous career at CBA and how they first noticed things changing in the payment space and the difference between a large financial services company and running a small fintech startup.
Please Note: This episode was recorded prior to the reporting of FY20 annual results on August 31, 2020.

This podcast is a production of Finpods Pty Ltd and Phil Muscatello. Phil is the host of the Shares for Beginners…
Many successful investors credit their success to ongoing learning and education, but if you’re riding the share market solo, where do you start? Equity ASA is brought to you by the Australian Shareholders’ Association to help you stay informed and to build financial knowledge through current, topical and expert interviews about investing, corporate governance and the share market. This podcast is produced and presented by Phil Muscatello from Shares for Beginners. Phil is a highly experienced media producer who has worked at the ABC, Triple-J, 2Triple-M & 2SM as well as producing corporate media for clients like CBA, ING Bank and Pfizer among others. He fell in love with the Association after one investor meeting. The ASA is Australia's largest, independent, not-for-profit individual investor association, bringing experience, scale and expertise to the table when it comes to looking after the needs of retail investors. We’re passionate about keeping the market fair for the everyday, independent investor, and we’ve been doing just that since 1960. This podcast is for information and educational purposes only. It isn’t financial advice, as we don’t know your personal financial situation. You shouldn’t buy or sell any investments based on what you’ve heard here. Any opinion or commentary is the view of the speaker only. This podcast doesn’t replace professional advice regarding your personal financial needs, circumstances or current situation.
