September 11, 2019News: Earnings Season Around the WorldThere is a big, wide world of opportunity out there, and one of the biggest mistakes investors can make is to not explore it. This mistake, when an investor only invests in their home market, is known as 'home country bias'. Think about it this way - Australia is 2% of the total value of the global share market. So if you only invest in Australia, you're missing out on the other 98% of the possible investing universe. Even the US - the largest share market in the world - is less than half of the global share market. So to explore the world of investing, today's episode is taking a look at earnings season around the world. We often speak about the Australian market and American market on this show - so we're avoiding these two countries. Instead we're heading to Europe, Asia and South America to take a look at what caught our eye in earnings season around the world. In this episode you will learn: • England: About one of the world's largest alcohol brands you may never have heard of • Europe: What negative interest rates have meant for European banks • Germany: How Volkswagen have rebounded since their emissions scandal in 2015 • Hong Kong: What the US-China trade war and recent government protests have meant for Hong Kong listed companies • Brazil: How one of the world's largest paper companies is performing • Argentina: How Latin America's version of Amazon.com is managing Argentina's currency crisis How to keep in touch with Equity Mates: • Equity Mates Website • Thought Starters • Equity Mates Facebook Page • Instagram • Equity Mates Twitter • Email ([email protected]) Hosted on Acast. September 08, 2019Expert Investor: Jonny Wilkinson, Equitise - Crowdfunding Innovative & Early-Stage CompaniesWe love investing in companies at Equity Mates, and normally this is done through the public markets and stock exchanges. However, there is a whole other world of private markets that retail investors, like us, rarely get access to. It's in these markets, for example, that you get to invest in innovative, early-stage companies before they potentially exit with IPO. The good news is that there are businesses set up to make the private markets accessible to the retail investor. One of the businesses is Equitise. In this episode, we chat with the Co-founder and Director of Equitise, Jonny Wilkinson. Equitise is an equity crowdfunding platform, allowing Australian and New Zealanders to invest in early-stage companies in return for equity. It has the potential to be an exciting addition to your investment portfolio! In this episode you will learn: • Who Equitise are and what equity crowdfunding is • Why a business would choose to crowdfund over VC, or debt • Pro's and con's of crowdfunding • How to buy into a company through Equitise • Some of the major success stories that have used Equitise to raise money • About the current state of the Australian VC market • Plus much more! In this episode, you will learn • The definition of cash flow • The definition of profit • What is means for a business to be cash-flow positive and cash-flow negative • If a business can be profitable but have negative cash-flow • Which of the two are more important How to Get Involved in Equity Mates: • Equity Mates Website • Ask Us Anything Page • Thought Starters • Equity Mates Facebook Page • Facebook Discussion Group • Instagram • Equity Mates Twitter • Email ([email protected]) Hosted on Acast. August 26, 2019News: Argentina's Market Plummets 48%. Why? | Emerging MarketsOn August 12th, 2019, Argentina's S&P Merval Index (the most important index of the Buenos Aires Stock Exchange), plummeted 48% - the second-largest single-day drop of any stock market since 1950. The Argentine peso also fell 15%. So the question is, why? Investors were spooked by the result of a primary election, and with the economy already struggling, and debt mounting, it increased fears for the possibility of Argentina defaulting on its debt, again. In this episode, we look at the context surrounding the stock market drop and use it as an opportunity to explore the advantages and risks associated with emerging markets. In this episode you will learn: • why Argentina's stock market plummeted 48% • what sovereign debt is • what measures Argentina's central bank took to stem the drop in their currency • the five worst stock market drops since 1950 • the key risks to consider when investing in emerging markets • some of the advantages of investing in emerging markets • the easiest way to get exposure to emerging markets How to Get Involved in Equity Mates: • Equity Mates Website • Ask Us Anything Page • Thought Starters • Equity Mates Facebook Page • Facebook Discussion Group • Instagram • Equity Mates Twitter • Email ([email protected]) Hosted on Acast. August 21, 2019Expert Investors: Julia Lee - Mastermind #3Mastermind has quickly become one of the most popular mini-series of Equity Mates. And for good reason. We love sitting down with Julia Lee to pitch a stock or trade idea to each. It's with great excitement that we bring you the 3rd episode in the series! How does it work? Each month, Ren (Alec) & Bryce will come together with Julia Lee, to each pitch a stock we think is either interesting, be it due to its business model, its opportunity for growth or perhaps its management, or that we think presents a good investment opportunity. Please note, in no way is this a buy, hold, or sell recommendation, and doing your own research on any stocks discussed is critical, this is general information and discussion only. The idea of these sessions is to expose you to the different ways in which we think about companies, and go about researching them, and to obviously learn from Julia, who has a ton of experience. We're hoping to get Julia's thoughts on our approaches. In this episode we discuss: • Using Reporting Season as part of your investing strategy • Baby Bunting (ASX: BBN) • Raytheon (NYSE: RTN) • BBUS How to Get Involved in Equity Mates: • Equity Mates Website • Ask Us Anything Page • Thought Starters • Equity Mates Facebook Page • Facebook Discussion Group • Instagram • Equity Mates Twitter • Email ([email protected]) Hosted on Acast. August 18, 2019News: 10 Companies We've Noticed This Earnings SeasonEarnings season - that time of the year when public companies report their half year or full year financial results. We're about halfway through the season at the moment and we've seen some very noteworthy reports so far. The most important thing to keep in mind when companies report - don't get too caught up in the expectations game. Analysts will have expectations and the share price will move based on how the company performs relative to these expectations. At Equity Mates what we focus on is asking ' does the company's recent report confirm my investment thesis?'. If your investment thesis still holds, then missing an analyst's expected number this reporting season isn't going to make a difference in the long-term. So in this episode we talk about 10 companies that caught our attention and unpack what their recent reports tell us about their businesses moving forward. In this episode we discuss: • Baby Bunting (ASX: BBN) • News Corp (ASX: NWS) • Breville Group (ASX: BRG) • oOh!Media (ASX: OML) • CSL Limited (ASX: CSL) • JB Hi-Fi (ASX: JBH) • Ansell (ASX: ANN) • ASX (ASX: ASX) • Invocare (ASX: IVC) • Walt Disney Co (NYSE: DIS) How to Get Involved in Equity Mates: • Equity Mates Website • Ask Us Anything Page • Thought Starters • Equity Mates Facebook Page • Facebook Discussion Group • Instagram • Equity Mates Twitter • Email ([email protected]) Hosted on Acast.
