McQuilty Quirke spent 18 years in the Australian Army as a medic. He deployed to Timor Leste, Iraq and Afghanistan.
In 2007, McQuilty was awarded the Nursing Service Cross for his lifesaving treatment of a soldier with multiple neck fractures during a training exercise in North Queensland in 2004.
We also discussed how he was the treating medic when I fell off the wash point at Lavarack Barracks and dislocated my shoulder. There were laughs, and there were tears. (I was crying, and he was laughing)
In 2011 McQuilty was Wounded-in-Action by an improvised explosive device detonated under his vehicle. The vehicle was thrown ten metres from the blast site, McQuilty was ejected from the rear hatch and thrown thirty metres and landed headfirst on the side of the road. There were several occasions over the next few hours where he would display no signs of life.
