Essential Scares

The Exorcist (1973) is a movie without reproach.  A vast majority of this show is purely Bobby and Allen gushing about just how much they loved the film.  There are times in the show were we keep the wall up in terms of our opinions on the movie too early on.  This is not one of them.  Whether its the perfect pacing, horrifying imagery, or ominous soundtrack The Exorcist is the perfect possession film.  All other possession films are trying to do what the Exorcist did.  Regardless of that though, we have to answer the all important question.  Is it essential?

We have another entry in the Resident Evil franchise and this one was certainly something.  Corbin and Allen are massive fans of the absurdity that is Resident Evil, and this show left us wanting.  It's hard to pin down just how badly this show misses the mark.  Whether its the bad writing, massive plot holes, or young adult inspired fan fiction Resident Evil (2022) just consistently misses the mark.  BUT we have lambasted movies and still called them essential, will that happen today?  Find Out now!

Here on Essential Scares we try to stay on top of release as much as possible, however VHS 94 slipped through the cracks last year.  Now, we are going to remedy that with our thoughts on the anthology horror film!  This film is comprised of 4 ideas for horror that don't necessarily have enough to be full fledged movies, but end up being solidly paced short films.  Does this film have 4 chances to be essential? Hail Ratma?  Most importantly though, is it essential?

This week we join a party in progress in the form of Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)!  This movie aimed directly into the veins of Zoomers nationwide, and it certainly is a valiant attempt however whether or not it manages to stick the landing is up for debate.  Our cast of Twitter caricatures decide that they want to play their favorite game, Bodies Bodies Bodies. It's basically Werewolf, or more commonly known now Among Us.  Everything turns quite sinister when a friend ends up dead for real.  How effective is the horror of this film that is largely lit with iPhones?  Is this movie going to be the hit that captures the humor of ZOomers?  Most importantly though, is it essential?

The fifth (or fifteenth, depending on how you count) entry in a major franchise is never an easy place to be, but director Dan Trachtenberg of 10 Cloverfield Lane fame took on the task in this Hulu original flick. Disney's first film in the Predator franchise since buying Fox, do they succeed at reinvigorating the franchise? Does Amber Midthunder cement her place as a action-horror heroine? Most importantly...is Prey essential?

Mad God (2022) a stop motion film thirty years in the making has recently released, and right off the bat the stop motion animation of this film is some of the greatest in all filmmaking.  We the audience are dropped into this disgusting twisted world of filth and destitution galore.  In the field of death there is a very strange beauty that is personified throughout the film.  As it is known, we have shot down films that are lauded and loved by many as not essential.  This movie still needs to earn it essentiality, does it? Listen in to find out.

Moving right through the Jordan Peele Directorial Filmography, we bring you our thoughts on Us (2019)!  Undeniably we here on the show are big fans of Jordan Peele's unique form of horror, and that is no different for Us.  The real question though is, can Peele live up to his own glory?  When a director sets the bar so high, how does he or she really continue to stay on that level?  Does Peele manage to keep that level of quality in his sophomore outing?  Does Us fall into the "Sophomore Slump"?  Most importantly though, is it essential?
