Our brains are wired to protect us from pain and to pursue pleasure. We encounter situations in our lives that our brains have to decide, is this safe or unsafe? Does this feel good, or not? Based on the circumstance, our brain creates thoughts, that fuel our emotions. These emotional/chemical response in our bodies, then drives our actions. Sometimes these actions are healthy and congruent with who we want to be, and sometimes they are unhealthy and not in line with who we want to be. Having this awareness can allow us to be kind to ourselves, and to give our brains a little grace.
