Nelson Tressler's early life was filled with trauma, struggle, and court trials. But although his childhood was something that many of us couldn’t fathom going through, he was able to turn his life around in a positive way. He set goals, kept a positive mindset, and stayed accountable to his actions and has developed the IGotSmarter App and wrote a book, The Unlucky Sperm Club, to help others do the same. We discuss how you are not a victim of your circumstances but a product of your choices. We talk about how to start a business or write a book and how to simply design a better life.
Maia Donohue is the author of the book, The Startup Mentor, and over the last decade with the organization, 3 Day Startup, Maia has been working with early stage founders and brilliant mentors around the world. He realized that getting the most out of mentorship isn't something that comes naturally, it's a skill that must be practiced and fine-tuned.
A great mentor can make the difference in getting your company launched. They can help you learn from their mistakes, raise money, hire the right people, and so much more. But as a founder, it is up to you to make it happen. This episode will show you how.
"We can embrace the pain of hitting the gym for 30 minutes a day to avoid the suffering of aches and pains of a sedentary lifestyle. We can embrace the pain of the fit. Our kids are sure to throw by taking away their mobile devices at the dinner table to avoid the suffering of years of lost, meaningful connection and conversation that we'll never get back.
We can embrace the pain of a difficult conversation with our spouse. To avoid the suffering of a Loveless marriage that might end up in divorce or ultimately being stuck in a marriage when divorce is really what we want.
We can also, as business owners, fire our top salesperson, who's the greatest top line contributor in our business to avoid the suffering of stagnant growth and losing all of our other top talent, because they're the biggest cancer in our culture. You see the reality of it is it's like this applies to everything in our life. But we are so conditioned to avoid those moments of pain, to avoid those moments of discomfort. And I believe that we all must choose our pain or our suffering will choose us."

On this episode of Establishing Your Empire I host Joah Spearman. Joah is the CEO and Founder of Localeur who has helped more than 5 million people experience traveling like a local from insiders who share authentic recommendations on their favorite local places to eat, drink and play. Joah started Localeur in 2013 by asking a dozen friends in Austin to recommend their favorite local spots before the South by Southwest Festival. Joah’s path has been anything but straight. His career started by working for the Texas Longhorns while in college, then a speechwriter in D.C. His first business was a social media consulting company helping to turn Austin’s Rainey Street into a nightlife district. After that, he opened a sneaker boutique in Downtown Austin, underneath the mayor’s office at City Hall. Then he convinced the founders of SXSW to let him create and run the first-ever fashion part of the festival. Somehow, the combination of all these experiences gave Joah a unique perspective on what a traveler really wants when they visit a new city: authentic recs from locals. Now, some 180 cities later, it seems to all make sense.

Lauren LoGiudice creates comedy through deeply flawed and painfully idiosyncratic characters. She has embodied some of the world’s most mysterious cultural icons and her work has been featured by The New York Times, the BBC and many others. In this episode we chat about how to make it as a comedian, how to market yourself online and how she wrote her new book: Inside Melania: What I Learned About Melania Trump by Impersonating Her.
Probably my favorite review is by Ritch Shydner: “...Lauren masterfully used Satire, parody and irony to process the Slovenian Ice Queen”
