  • Brushes, Beauty & the Business Behind It All ft. Anisa Telwar Kaicker

The beauty industry loves talking about products.

But what about the tools doing the work, like the brush touching the face? That often gets treated like an afterthought. And, Anisa Telwar Kaicker is over it.

In this episode of Esthetician Unlocked, Elaine Sterling sits down with Anisa, founder and CEO of Anisa International, for a conversation about cosmetic brushes, quality, sustainability, leadership, and building a beauty business that can actually last.

    What You'll Learn:

    • How Anisa accidentally found her way into cosmetic brushes
    • Why synchronicity can matter more than the perfect business plan
    • Why not all brushes are created equal
    • Why Anisa International’s vertical integration model supports consistency
    • Why Anisa prefers collaboration over order-taking with beauty brands
    • How her leadership style evolved across decades of building a company
    • Why founders need patience when their teams are catching up to the vision
    • How philanthropy became a purpose anchor for Anisa
    • Why Anisa is letting go of Anisa Beauty to refocus on the core business

The big lesson: quality is not accidental, leadership is not static and beauty tools deserve way more respect than they usually get.

    About Anisa:

Anisa Telwar Kaicker is the Founder and CEO of Anisa International, a female-founded global leader in cosmetic brush design, innovation, and responsible manufacturing.

Since launching the company in 1992, Anisa has built a vertically integrated business that supports some of the world’s leading beauty brands through brush development, manufacturing, quality control, and collaborative design. Her work is rooted in craftsmanship, consistency, ethical production and a deep understanding of how tools shape product performance.

She is also deeply committed to philanthropy, especially animal welfare, and views business as a vehicle for positive ripple effects beyond product.

    Episode Highlights:

04:54 Brushes Found AnisaAnisa says brushes chose her. Her path into the beauty industry was not a perfectly planned founder story. It began with her family’s import-export business, a chance meeting with someone whose family manufactured cosmetic brushes and a willingness to try something new when her original plan fell apart. She worked as a waitress at night and sold brushes during the day. The lesson, according to her, is not “wait for destiny to do the work.” It is that sometimes the right opportunity looks random before it starts making sense.

11:24 Quality Is the Whole Business
When Elaine asks how Anisa works with top beauty brands, Anisa explains that the real answer is consistency. Whether a brush is sold in Japan, China, Atlanta or anywhere else, it needs to perform within a controlled range. Hair fallout, pull force, handle weight, density, shape and application all have to meet the standard. That kind of quality does not happen by accident, and it is also why Anisa International is not the cheapest option. When you promise quality, you have to own the responsibility.

12:59 Vertical Integration Is Not Just a Buzzword
Anisa explains her end-to-end business model, including two facilities in China that complete the product and run quality control inspections. But the more interesting part is that she does not see her company as an order-taker. She wants to understand what the brand needs, what product the brush will be used with, and how the tool can help differentiate the brand. In other words, the brush is part of the strategy, not just an accessory.

16:24 The Founder Had to Evolve Too
Anisa speaks honestly about her leadership evolution. In the early years, she was directive, intense, and focused on getting things done. Over time, she realized that energy was not always helping her team. As she grew, the team changed with her. She now focuses more on aligning around outcomes rather than dictating every step. It is a very real founder lesson: if the team keeps hitting the same wall, sometimes the wall is your leadership style.

24:39 Purpose Is What Gets You Up on the Hard Days
Anisa’s philanthropy work with Lifeline and animal welfare became an anchor for her. She shares that some days, the demands of running a business feel like too much. But knowing the ripple effect her business can have gives her a reason to keep showing up. For Anisa, giving back is not a nice little extra. It is part of what makes the work meaningful. She may not remember every brush she made, but she will remember the impact she helped create.

  • Clean Beauty, Biotech & The Future of Skincare ft. Krupa Koestline
The beauty industry has never met a buzzword it did not want to put on a label.
But ingredient name-dropping without real formulation logic is just…name-dropping.

In this episode of Esthetician Unlocked, Elaine Sterling sits down with Krupa Koestline, award-winning cosmetic chemist and founder of KKT Innovation Labs, for a conversation about what happens when skincare science, brand strategy, and honest ingredient education finally meet.

    What You'll Learn:

    • How Krupa moved from biotech into cosmetic chemistry
    • Why her Estée Lauder internship changed the direction of her career
    • Why custom formulation beats off-the-shelf private label
    • Why new beauty brands need to define their niche early
    • What clean beauty actually means when you remove the fearmongering
    • Why long-term environmental impact matters in ingredient choices
    • Why inflammation affects melanated skin differently
    • When exosomes actually make sense in professional skincare
    • Why salmon sperm and snail mucin need more honest conversations
    • Why PRP and microneedling still make scientific sense
    • Why most great skincare results are built at home

The big theme: skincare science is not about chasing the loudest trend. It is about knowing what works, when it works, who it works for, and when the marketing needs to calm down.

    About Krupa:

Krupa Koestline is an award-winning cosmetic chemist and founder of KKT Innovation Labs, known for her work in clean beauty formulation, biotech-driven skincare innovation and custom product development. With a background in biotech and chemistry, Krupa built her career at the intersection of science and beauty. Her work focuses on helping founders develop bespoke formulations that connect brand vision with biological reality, rather than relying on off-the-shelf private label products.

Krupa has been recognized with the Florence Wall Cosmetic Chemist Award and named one of Beauty Independent’s top product developers. Through KKT Innovation Labs, she has helped shape products rooted in ingredient transparency, skin science, sustainability, and thoughtful formulation.

    Episode Highlights:

    09:53 Custom Formulation > Copy-Paste Skincare

Krupa built KKT Innovation Labs around bespoke formulation, not private label. She saw that founders did not need another off-the-shelf product with a different label slapped on it. They needed formulas built around their exact customer, brand vision, skin concern and ingredient philosophy. For Krupa, this blend is how products stop sounding different and start being different.

12:05 Your Product Cannot Be Everything to Everyone

Krupa gives beauty founders the advice many do not want to hear: define your niche early. In a market drowning in exosomes, peptides, biotech buzzwords, and “does-it-all” promises, focus is a competitive advantage. Niche products are doing better because they solve one problem clearly for one person who actually needs it. The brands that try to do everything often end up saying nothing.

16:09 Clean Beauty Without the Panic Button

Krupa does not define clean beauty through fear. For her, it is about being mindful of what goes into a product, how it affects the body short term and long term, and what consequences it may have for the environment. That includes things like biodegradability, aquatic toxicity, soil impact, and ingredients that may be restricted in one region but still allowed elsewhere. Clean beauty, in her view, is not about scaring people. It is about giving them better options.

35:44 Exosomes Are Not Magic Fairy Dust

Krupa explains exosomes in a way that actually makes sense: they are like tiny postcards carrying messages between cells. They can contain proteins, mRNA, peptides, amino acids and signals that help tell cells what to do next. That is why they can be powerful for wound healing. But the important part is context. The postcard has to get where it needs to go. Otherwise, it is just sitting on the porch.

42:00 The 80/20 Rule of Real Skincare Results

Elaine brings up the idea that 80% of results come from what happens at home, and Krupa’s science-driven perspective supports the bigger point. Professional treatments matter, especially microneedling, PRP, peels and post-procedure recovery, but the day-to-day routine is where the skin is constantly being supported or sabotaged. Great skin has to be maintained.

  • Skincare Is More Than a Side Hustle ft. Kathy Walton

The aesthetics industry loves a shiny object and Kathy Walton has seen (and had) enough.

In this episode of Esthetician Unlocked, Elaine Sterling sits down with Kathy Walton, CEO and Founder of Inspira Skin, for a conversation about how aesthetics professionals can stop losing the skincare conversation to influencers, big brands and online discounting and actually build a brand of their own.

Her message is direct: a logo on a bottle is not a brand. A treatment is not a client journey. A client asking for Botox does not mean the conversation stops at Botox.

    What You'll Learn:

    • Why Kathy built her career across dermatology, devices, PRP, microneedling and private label skincare
    • How corporate roadblocks can become redirections
    • Why putting your logo on a bottle does not build a skincare brand
    • How private label can protect your margins when big brands get undercut online
    • Why skincare should be part of every treatment journey, not an afterthought
    • How to turn one treatment into a complete client plan
    • Why patient and staff education drive loyalty
    • Why TikTok skincare trends can cause real damage

Tune in and learn how to lead the conversations you’re meant to lead.

  • The LA Facialist on Beauty Hype & What Actually Works ft. Candace Marino

Some estheticians build their entire identity around one device, one treatment or one trendy ingredient. Candace Marino, founder of The LA Facialist, took a completely different path.

    What You'll Learn:

    • How her “omakase facial” approach puts assessment before trends

    • Why estheticians need to act like experts, not order-takers

    • How Candace gets clients to leave with clear home-care protocols
    • How Candace thinks about innovation, exosomes, spicules, and salmon PDRN

  • Stop Abusing Retinol: The Microbiome Conversation ft. Dr. Tiina Meder

Somewhere along the way, the beauty industry decided that more is better. More retinol. More exfoliation. More concentration. More products being pushed to people whose skin never asked for half of it.

In this episode of Esthetician Unlocked, Elaine Sterling sits down with Dr. Tiina Meder, dermatologist, cosmetic safety expert and founder of Meder Beauty, to talk about why that mindset is catching up with us. Tiina talks about the science behind peptides, proteins, probiotics, dysbiosis, the gut-skin-brain axis and why product education should go deeper than branded talking points. She also challenges estheticians to partner with brands that actually teach anatomy, physiology and ingredient function instead of handing them a sales script dressed up as education.

    What You'll Learn:

    • Why Tiina moved from cardiology into dermatology and skincare innovation
    • Why she believes peptides, proteins and probiotics are part of the future of safe skincare
    • Why brand education should teach skin anatomy and physiology, not just product benefits
    • How the beauty industry actually created the rise in sensitive, irritated skin
    • Why retinol is powerful, overused and in need of more professional control
    • What the microbiome actually does for skin immunity, resilience and aging
    • How the gut, skin and brain are connected through inflammation and stress
    • Why acne, depression and inflammation cannot always be treated as separate issues
    • How estheticians can build more trust by recommending less, but recommending smarter

This episode is for every esthetician who is tired of watching clients wreck their skin in the name of “results” and wants a smarter, safer, more science-backed way to talk about skincare.

    About Tiina:

Dr. Tiina Meder is a dermatologist, cosmetic safety expert and founder of Meder Beauty. With more than 30 years of clinical experience across cardiology, dermatology and skincare innovation, Tiina has become a leading voice in microbiome-friendly skincare, safe ingredient use and professional education.

Her work focuses on creating effective skincare that supports long-term skin resilience rather than relying on aggressive actives or trend-driven formulations. Through Meder Beauty, Tiina has developed products centered on peptides, probiotics, prebiotics and safe, science-backed formulations designed to support professional skin practitioners and their clients. Tiina has educated beauty professionals in more than 40 countries and continues to advocate for a more ethical, informed and safety-conscious beauty industry. Her approach challenges professionals to think beyond product marketing and understand the biology of skin, the microbiome and the whole-body systems that influence skin health.

  • Stop Freestyling on People’s Faces ft. Lyn Ross

The esthetics industry loves a new tool, a new peel, a new device, a new protocol - anything that looks like the next “must-have treatment”. But not all that glitters is gold.

In this episode of Esthetician Unlocked, Elaine Sterling sits down with Lyn Ross, founder of Institut’ DERMed, to talk about what real professional mastery looks like. Lyn shares how her own struggles with acne and oily skin shaped her career, how physician referrals helped build her reputation and the big esthetician knowledge gap no one wants to talk about.

    What You'll Learn:

    • How Lyn’s personal skin struggles became the beginning of a corrective skincare career
    • Why Institut’ DERMed grew out of a real education gap in chemical peels and skin function
    • Why pH, concentration and formulation knowledge should be basic professional hygiene
    • Why treatment stacking can become dangerous when ticket-building outruns clinical judgment
    • How client education turns the end of the appointment into a trust-building moment
    • Why touch therapy, energetic presence, and human connection still belong in modern esthetics

The big theme: esthetics is not just about what you can do to the skin. It is about knowing what the skin can handle, what the client needs and when your hands matter more than the machine.

    About the Guest:
