How Do We Truly Forgive
Learning to forgive someone is difficult if not impossible. I know that statement sounds contradictory to what this podcast series has been about. However, it’s in out our nature to hold onto offense with high tenacity. Call it an adaptive process or our carnal nature, but when we experience trauma, we remember it. It is not uncommon that our life experiences become hard wired into who we are. We associate smells, sounds, and a myriad of other sensory input into the memory. Nothing works better at ensuring an event is remembered than trauma, however. If this is so, how do we truly forgive?
cannot. It requires God’s Spirit working within us.
Etched into our minds
In a war, trauma will occur.
In life, there are also events that are forever etched in our minds — this associative memory of traumatic events
and sensory input has been titled post-traumatic
stress disorder. There is a litany of resources that you can go and find on
how to deal with PTSD, but at the end of the day,
you are dealing with the symptoms of and not curing
the underlying problem. Neuronal patterns
are hardwired and difficult to rewire if the
connections have been produced through emotionally charged situations.
The world has its programs and systems to facilitate forgiveness, but they in no way achieve what the Spirit of God can achieve when we allow His presence to renew our minds.

Many may wonder what PTSD has to do with forgiveness. The
truth of the matter is most of the resentment and unforgiveness we hold against
others comes from an emotionally charged experience. Tired into the memory is the
emotion of how it felt, and how it hurt you. In truth,
the more it hurt, the harder is it to forgive. But physiologically it goes beyond forgiveness we have to reprogram the
neuronal circuits to see the event as
How do we truly forgive?
So how do we truly forgive? Where do we even begin to rewire
this portion of our mind to adapt to the
new reality of forgiving?
Many people will try to convince you that forgiveness is a
choice, and this is partially true. But true
forgiveness goes father than just choosing
to forgive. True forgiveness requires a contentious
effort to change who we are within and how we view the reality concerning the
Our minds have to be renewed
to experience true forgiveness of others.
God’s forgiveness sets the pattern
God’s forgiveness of man is the perfect example of true
forgiveness in action. When we read the Old Testament,
we see God working through various methods to lead man into an obedient state.
He gave Adam one restriction and man failed. He gave Moses a set of Laws and Isreal
failed. God we attempting to show mankind

Just like every good father, as we raise our children we can
tell them what is not appropriate, we can give them the house rules, but until

Designed with a purpose
God changed His approach to mankind.
God showed man how much He cared by creating a path to forgiveness. God changed
His mind about humanity while we were yet sinners and Christ died for us. God
had to show humanity that He was a God who
saw great value in humanity. A God who designed man with a purpose, for a
purpose, and on purpose. A God whose intentions were that none perish but that all should come to repentance.
As mortal fleshly people,
we can not within ourselves breakdown the
barriers that hold us back from truly showing true love to all people. To require
that we not only show love to all people but we also show that s
