Today there is a growing mistrust of any religious institution, ritual or ceremony. Equally, there is an apathy and an anti-government mentality that pervades our society. We no longer trust the police, the politician, or the priest. The younger the generation, the more the temptation to give up on these institutions.

Jesus is representative of the younger generation of his time. He was less than 30 years old when he began his ministry. What was happening in Jesus’ day is not far removed from our situation. History repeats itself, and we can learn from the example of Jesus how to work with the systems that surround us.

Jesus clearly taught us in Mark 12:17 “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they marveled at him. If Jesus the Son of God and the greatest authority exemplified this in his life, how can we imitate him?

Lord grant us the capacity to be a healing presence in the world today!

We are all called and endowed with the authority of Jesus to usher in the Kingdom of God. I noticed something new this week in my reading of Luke 10:1 “After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go.” These seventy-two are nameless and they are in addition to the 12 apostles that Jesus had already called and commissioned in Luke 9.

I was struck by the realization that Jesus sent this large band of disciples ahead of his own arrival. They were given the same authority and commission as the twelve apostles, and they experienced what it means to exercise the authority of Jesus.

This is what Jesus is calling us into when he says “Follow Me.”

Let us all learn to go ahead into every town and city before Jesus comes!

Spiritual warfare is to enter the places that the devil has dominated and reclaim them for Jesus Christ. Spiritual warfare is not just learning to defend ourselves against the attack of the enemy. Rather, it is to enter the strongholds of the enemy and bind him in the same way that Jesus has bound him. This is how we imitate Jesus.

The kingdom of God comes with power. It is not so much what we do as much as who we are. It is Christ in us that enters any place and every situation, and his presence cannot be ignored. Christ in us commands authority. We need to remember this and go forth in the certainty of the finished work of Christ and not in our own confidence.

The primary message with which Jesus begins his ministry is “The Kingdom of God has come.” This is the good news, the gospel. Let us carry this message in every way in which we imitate Jesus Christ. Let us reclaim the kingdoms of the world for the

This Sunday we ordain elders to serve Jesus Christ and the Church. The Jesus model of leadership is completely counter cultural. Therefore, it is very important for the church to follow the example of Jesus and not that of the world.

To be a disciple of Jesus means we choose to pick up the cross and follow after him. He left heaven and came down to earth in humility to love, serve and to die for us. The scriptures remind us in 1 John 3:8, “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.” The goodness of God will not tolerate the continuation of evil. This is why when Jesus comes, he healed, cast out demons, healed the leper, and raised the dead. He is also the one who refuses to ignore sin but pays the full price for sin with his own death.

Following this example means that we who are called to lead must exhibit a lifestyle that others want to follow. It is a lifestyle of humility, love, service and an intolerance for sin, evil and injustice.

May our Elders set such an example that the church becomes attractive once again, and there will be many who want to follow Jesus.

God loves America and He is in control. Praise the Lord for what happened this week! What do you think the Lord wants to teach us from these events? Unless we hit rock bottom, we will continue in our delusion of being better than we really are, and this blindness prevents us from seeing reality and truth. This is true not only for individuals, but I believe it is true for us as a nation. As a nation we have been humbled, and this is good. From this low place it is an upward journey and to a higher calling of God over our lives. We have to dream together again and create a new dream as Americans.

I am full of hope for our nation. This is a time for turning to God. In the parable of the sower and the seed we are reminded that it is good seed sown in good ground that produces a good harvest. This is a kingdom principle.

Often the seed is wasted because the ground is not ready to receive it. Jesus compares this to the prophecy of Isaiah about Israel: “For this people’s heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.”

Let us ask God for a new blessing to see and to hear so that the promise of Jesus will be fulfilled in us. “But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.”

Lord grant this blessing and promise for America! Come and heal us!

Today is Ascension Day. Forty days after the resurrection, Jesus was taken up into heaven. After forty years, Israel entered the promised land. After forty days of fasting, Jesus began his ministry. After appearing to his disciples for forty days, Jesus ascended into heaven and he started something new. There is the wilderness phase followed by conquering the land of Canaan, a fasting period that begins the ministry of Jesus on earth, and post ascension, what is the new era? The disciples go into all the world with power to do his will on earth as it is in heaven.

To complete what Jesus began, our vision and image of Jesus cannot be limited to the gospels. At the Ascension Jesus is no more the human Jesus of the gospels. He is now the exalted Jesus of the Book of Revelation. This is how Paul explains: "Christ, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2:6-11).

Jesus is back in heaven and is reinstated with all the divine fullness. From his fullness he gives authority to his disciples to reclaim the whole earth for him.

Look to Jesus! Obey his command! Establish his kingdom!

We are the disciples of Jesus Christ and after the resurrection Jesus commissioned us to go into all the world and proclaim the gospel and make disciples. A disciple is called to follow and imitate the master.

When you read the ending of all the gospels, there is an absence of healing ministry in the life of Jesus after the Resurrection. Yet in His ministry healing has a central and public place. So, why did Jesus heal so many before the Resurrection and none afterward? I believe it is because He gave the disciples all authority in heaven and on earth to go and do what He did. Jesus commissions us and the church to continue the work which He began.

We are in Christ and Christ is in us. It is His presence that we trust for healing. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Therefore, when the Acts of the Apostles describes the early church, we notice that there is a resurgence of healing in the life and ministry of the disciples and the church.

To be a New Testament disciple is to continue to do what Jesus did!

The Gospel of Matthew strikes a sharp contrast as it ends with the story of the Resurrection. On the one hand, the attempt is to suppress the Truth of the resurrection. The chief priests, the elders, and the governor will together ensure that they rewrite history. It is amazing that after 2000 years this same power play and suppression of truth continues. Even today the Truth of Jesus is at stake not because of what unbelievers do, but more so because it is too costly for believers in power to submit to the Truth of Jesus. Truth is bartered away for a price. They gave them a sum of money and said: "Tell people: His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep" (Matthew 28:13).

In contrast, see how God chooses to write history with a band of unschooled, powerless, and poor men and women. Truth is all they have, and this band of disciples will pay any price, even with the price of their own lives, just for the privilege of telling the truth about Jesus. "And Jesus came and said to them, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore... And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age' " (Matthew 28:18-20). We are here because one group of people were willing to pay the price for truth. And only they had Jesus with them.

To be with Jesus is an invitation to pay a price and make history!

We have all been asked the question: "Do you love me?" Or we ourselves may ask: "Do you love me?" What am I looking for? For me it is more than loyalty, responsibility, or even just commitment. This question addresses the deeper aspect of my relationship. Primary relationships such as parent-child, husband-wife, friend with friend, as well as God and man all depend on the answer to this fundamental question.

The Easter story of John 21 reminds us that Jesus is still asking: "Do you love me? Do you love me? Do you love me?" Three times he asks us the same question he asked Peter. Remember this is a question addressed to Peter one of his inner circle of disciples. Everyone who loves Jesus and has been a disciple knows that it is easy to slip into duty, obligation, or obedience rather than love.

It is only love which captures the heart of God. To be a disciple is a call to renew our love for God and the world that he loves.

"Let us consider how to stir up one another to love . . ." (Hebrews 10:24).
