As one of Ethiopia’s best-known singers, Ejigayehu “Gigi” Shibabaw has recorded and toured the world with an enviable cast of international master musicians—Pharoah Sanders, Herbie Hancock, Zakir Hussain, Hamid Drake, Sly & Robbie, Abegasu Shiota, Buckethead, Karsh Kale, DJ Disk and Bill Laswell. She can be heard on recordings of her own, as a guest with others and even on movie soundtracks. And yet this warm, laid-back woman takes her growing reputation in stride.

Ejigayehu “Gigi” Shibabaw latest album Mesgana Ethiopia is produced by MOD Technologies, the label founded by Grammy-winner Bill Laswell (who has collaborated with countless legends from Mick Jagger to Laurie Anderson to Tony Williams). This release features Gigi singing her original songs mixed with some Ethiopian traditional tunes – all sung in Amaharic – bridging African styles, Reggae, Dub, Avant-Funk,/Jazz, World Beat, Trance, and Ambient music.
