  • Valentina -Introduction To Animal Health Surveillance
Welcome to "Introduction to Animal Health Surveillance," the new podcast episode with Valentina Busin, EuFMD Capacity Development and Learning Specialist. In this podcast, Valentina shares her expertise in supporting countries and veterinary services in their preparedness and control of FAST diseases. At the EuFMD, we prioritize the development of training tools, collaborating closely with leading experts in the field to create a range of courses, some of which are open-access and available on our virtual learning webpage. Valentina's expertise includes passive surveillance, a fundamental pillar of animal health surveillance that emphasizes early disease recognition and prompt reporting, particularly crucial for fast diseases. Our open-access course aims to enhance the general understanding of surveillance systems in the context of animal health. It provides valuable insights into how each of us can effectively contribute to reducing the impact of transboundary diseases. With a duration of approximately one hour, this course serves as an engaging and useful tool for various audiences, including veterinarians, paraveterinarians, and farmers, ultimately increasing the likelihood of reporting suspicions of FAST diseases. Join us on this journey as we explore valuable and interactive ways to increase capacity in the sector of animal health surveillance, ensuring successful prevention and control of FAST diseases.

  • Solutions for FMD emergency preparedness (Rodolfo Bellinzoni and Marisa Martínez)
Welcome to a new episode of our podcast.

Marisa Martínez interviewed Rodolfo Bellinzoni from Biogenesis Bago to explore the available tools for the prevention and control of an FMD emergency. Learn more about the impact cost, the level of investment required to control an outbreak, and some of the most effective tools for prevention and preparedness.

Marisa Martínez is a Doctor in Veterinary Medicine, and graduated in 2008 from the Universidad del Salvador, Veterinary School, in Argentina.

She worked on a dairy farm as Milk Quality Solution Manager in DeLaval from 2010 to 2012. Marisa joined Biogenesis Bagó in 2012, as Dairy Technical Service. Later on, as part of the Innovation

Department, she developed intramammary products that were launched to the market in 2016. From 2019, she was Technical Department Manager, and in 2022, became Product Manager for FMD and Biosecurity.

Since 2012, she is an active Member of the Honorable Board of Directors of APROCAL, a non-profit organization that works towards milk and dairy products quality in Argentina, and from 2015 to 2020 was its President. She has a Certification in Biosecurity Audits by Biocheck, from Ghent University and holds several publications at renowned congresses, both on dairy and FMD.

Rodolfo Bellinzoni is a Veterinary Doctor, who graduated from the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences of the Universidad Nacional del Centro de la Provincia de Buenos. He then obtained his Ph.D. degree and did postdoctoral training in Molecular Virology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, USA.

He joined Biogénesis Bagó in 1990 as R&D Manager and later, in 2000, he took the position of Director of Industrial Operations.

In parallel to his work in the company, between 2010 and 2014 he was the Director of Operations of Sinergium Biotech, where he managed technology transfer processes for the manufacture of influenza and pneumococcal vaccines in Argentina.

For Biogénesis Bagó, he led the design, engineering, construction, and technology transfer processes for the foot-and-mouth disease vaccine production plant that the company developed in Yangling, China.

From 2019, he was Director of Industrial Operations and Innovation for Biogénesis Bagó. His achievements for the company include leading the licensing process by which Biogénesis Bagó achieved supplier status with the Foot-and-Mouth Disease Antigen and Vaccine Bank of the USA, Canada, and Mexico and the National Animal Vaccine and Veterinary Countermeasure Bank (NAVVCB) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

In 2017, he became a full member of the Argentine National Academy of Agronomy and Veterinary Science for his main contribution to the control of foot-and-mouth disease.

  • Risk monitoring tool for FAST diseases (RMT-FAST) - R. Condoleo
The cross-border movement of animal pathogens can lead to dramatic social and economic consequences. Therefore countries implement prevention measures (e.g. surveillance, border controls and trade restrictions) to reduce the probability of entry of new pathogens. However, resources available for such risk mitigation measures are limited, especially considering the large number of potential source areas and different pathways of entry of the pathogens. We propose a simple and easy-to-use tool to monitor the risk of introduction of foot and mouth and similar transboundary (FAST) animal diseases (Peste des Petits Ruminants, Lumpy Skin Disease, Rift Valley Fever, Sheep and Goat Pox) with the aim of assisting health authorities to identify the most likely routes and source countries for the introduction of these diseases.

  • Serological surveillance of FMD immunity level in Republic of Korea, 2021 - H-J. Seo
Since 2018, the Republic of Korea (ROK) has been vaccinating all susceptible livestock with one out of three approved vaccines which serotype O and A antigens according to the prime and boost vaccination schedule. We were carrying out continuously monitoring the vaccination status and immunity level through serological surveillance and if the standard antibody positive rate is below, a heavy fine will be imposed. In this regard, in this study, serological surveillance was performed using serum collected in 2021, and the collected data were analyzed immunity level.

  • West Nile virus signals detected by Padi-web Google news reports - K. Serres
In this study, we used the Platform for Automated extraction of Disease Information from the web (PADI-Web) as an epidemic intelligence tool to detect West Nile virus (WNV) outbreak signals, and epidemiological information throughout Europe from 2006 to 2021 in online news reports. The purpose of this study is to characterise epidemiological information on an outbreak event (such as: location and date of the event, diseased host, implicated vector and covariate risk factors) found in media reports. This descriptive analysis will allow us to explore the role of media reports and how they can help map disease occurence and predictions in complement with traditional indicator based surveillance.

  • Identifying and addressing the barriers to effective FMD vaccination in Kenya - P. Compston
Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is endemic in Kenya, with frequent outbreaks. Understanding socioeconomic drivers affecting disease control within Kenya’s livestock systems, and the cost-effectiveness of control options, are important components of designing an FMD control programme. This study aimed to integrate quantitative economic analysis with qualitative data to provide recommendations for disease control.
