In football, fans rarely agree with one another, sometimes it’s biased based upon affiliation with a certain club or player, sometimes you can look through the same lens and come to drastically different conclusions on a player’s ability, the quality of a manager, the impact of a new signing.
One of my favourite catchphrases in football, something I say on the euro elite football podcast, is that football,—is a game of opinions. Reasonable minds would agree, that in football, we often have to agree to disagree.
With that being said, the 2022 Ballon D’or winner, for most football fans, is not a topic of controversy.
Parring a huge surprise, Real Madrid and French centre forward Karim Benzema will take home his first Ballon D’or in 2022. The icing on an already marvellous cake, that has seen Benzema win five Champions Leagues, four La Liga titles and is the joint third top scorer in Champions League history with 86 goals.
The French forward will now be remembered as one of the greatest players of the Champions League era and an all-time great.
Today episode analyses his 2021–22 season and assesses how Karim Benzema became the frontrunner for this year’s Ballon d’Or.
