  • Intimate Knowledge of the Holy Spirit (sermon 2074)
One of the enduring elements of Spurgeon's public ministry, reflective of his private life, is his delight in and dependence on the Holy Spirit. He mentions him often, prays to him regularly, delights in him personally, and depends on him resolutely. He is a good guide for us, then, concerning intimate knowledge of the Holy Spirit. As often, Spurgeon is not afraid of his own experience, but his starting point and guiding principle is the Word of God, as he considers what it is to have the Holy Spirit dwelling with us and in us. I think that the personality and operations of the Holy Spirit is a fairly significant weak point in modern Reformed evangelicalism, perhaps because of an over-reaction to Charismatic excess, but I also wonder if we have downplayed his presence and influence because we do not know him very well. Whatever the case, Spurgeon is corrective and instructive as he guides us through the truth of John 14:17, helping us to understand who we know, and how, and what it means to have this intimacy with the Third Person of the Godhead. As one who needs him, and wants him more than I have him, I hope it will be a blessing to you.

  • Devo 95: Glorifying God
The devotional centers on the biblical imperative to glorify God through intentional awareness of His divine activity in everyday life, drawing from Jesus' healing of the paralytic in Luke 5 and the call to praise found in Psalm 34. It emphasizes that glorifying God is not merely an emotional outburst but a disciplined practice of recognizing His hand in circumstances, cultivating continual praise, and exalting His name through words, actions, and choices. The preacher underscores the danger of inconsistent Christian behavior that undermines God's reputation, especially in evangelism, and calls believers to cultivate a personal, heartfelt worship that is spontaneous and rooted in Scripture. Whether in private devotion or public worship, the focus must remain on God, not on self-expression or conformity, and believers are encouraged to use biblical texts—especially the Psalms and Revelation—as tools to articulate their worship. Ultimately, the more one perceives God's faithfulness, the more naturally and authentically glorification flows from the heart.

  • Stockton Open Air 03/09/2026
Please pray for evangelism every Thursday at 11:30 am. This message was preached on the High Street of Stockton: The Gospel of Jesus Christ is proclaimed, emphasising that humanity is naturally an enemy of God due to sin and cannot achieve salvation through religious works or moral effort. It highlights the transformative power of God's grace, using the Apostle Paul's conversion from persecutor to believer as a primary example of divine reconciliation. The central message rests on Romans 5:10, explaining that believers are reconciled to God through Christ's death and saved by His perfect life, which fulfills the law's demands. The preacher urges listeners to abandon self-righteousness and trust solely in the imputed righteousness of Jesus for forgiveness and eternal life. Ultimately, the text calls for a response of faith, inviting sinners to find rest and peace with God through the finished work of Christ.

  • Seeking Certainty (Remastered)
How can one know that God loves and cares for His children? In this sermon on Psalm 63:1–3 titled "Seeking Certainty," Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones proclaims that Christians can know this by trusting in God's revelation of Jesus Christ. A Christian that is maturing in their faith is one who rests on what Christ has done for them. This mature faith produces assurance that is not simply a passing emotion that comes and goes, but it is an abiding and true experience knowing they belong to God. That belonging is proven in a life of humble obedience. However, Dr. Lloyd-Jones also warns against those who teach an assurance of bare intellectual assent. They say that to simply claim that one believes in Christ and His gospel is all that is needed of assurance. This is shown to be inadequate from the many scriptural passages that show the deep and loving trust that the saints of God can have in the gospel. This is an intimate and personal knowledge that God loves them and has sent his Son to die a cruel death on the cross so that they could be saved. This is certainly intellectual assent to the gospel, but it is more. It is the product of the Holy Spirit working in their lives so that they trust God and His promises in true faith. This should be an experience that all Christians seek and obtain.

  • The Secret of Revival
Genuine spiritual revival is universally accessible to any group of believers who fully surrender to God, regardless of their location or resources. It identifies intense, persistent prayer and a deep reverence for the Bible as the essential prerequisites for experiencing the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Historical examples from the Moravian movement, the Wesleyan revival, and various missionary fields illustrate how fervent intercession and scriptural fidelity have consistently preceded powerful spiritual awakenings. The text warns against relying on human organization or ecclesiastical efficiency, asserting that these are merely idols that hinder divine intervention. Ultimately, the message calls for a return to absolute dependence on God through prayer and His Word to bring about global evangelization.
