  • Blending Prayer and Lifestyle in a Harmonious Way with Janet McHenry

Have you felt unsure about the way you go to God in prayer? Many people have their own rules and tips for the “right” way to pray or how you “should” pray. Maybe it’s time to step away from rigid judgments to discover a praying lifestyle that syncs with your God-given personality. This week’s conversation continues with Janet McHenry about finding your natural prayer style.

Janet McHenry is the author of a book coming out in January called Praying Personalities: Finding Your Natural Prayer Style. We discuss how finding your natural prayer style is much like exploring questions on personality assessments. We also cover points about redefining what prayer looks like, examining examples of biblical praying styles, and finding ways to blend prayer into our modern lifestyles.

    • [04:13] Janet started being more mindful about deeper prayer after praying with a young father.
    • [07:27] Janet recalls an experience of injustice against her husband and their ranch. In the end, this experience became the testimonial of a previous prayer.
    • [14:38] The Bible gives examples of around four different categories of prayer styles.
    • [18:59] We discuss how finding your natural prayer style is much like exploring questions on personality assessments.
    • [21:20] Janet shares which prayer style she gravitates towards. Then, she talks about what helps if what she’s saying resonates with you.
    • [25:38] Understanding your personality requires you to look at different aspects, such as your internal desires, your internal motivations, or your behavior.
    • [30:53] Praying beyond your reach for the bigger picture you may not see yet.
    • [37:09] Prayer is less about answers, and more about access.

  • Politics, Faith, and Community With Kaitlyn Schiess

Where does scripture and the Bible fit into our political discourse? With the election around the corner and so much division in our country, can we find common ground? I met someone who thinks so. Kaitlyn Schiess is a doctoral student at Duke Divinity School, and she’s the author of two books, including The Ballot and the Bible: How Scripture Has Been Used and Abused in American Politics' and Where We Go from Here. I just love the way she thinks and her perspective on politics and going back to the bible.

    In Today's Episode

    • [04:26] During Kaitlyn’s studies at Liberty University, the question of politics and faith was unavoidable.
    • [05:07] She was figuring out what she really believed, and God directed her towards seminary.
    • [06:19] Politics were colliding with her theological world.
    • [07:06] She wrote her first book in 2020.
    • [12:38] God is good and asking questions will lead to finding goodness.
    • [15:11] We have the rest of our lives to figure out the truth. It's fun and challenging.
    • [19:50] Start with a local perspective of what it would look like to live in your neighborhood.
    • [22:35] Showing up to help your community politically is life giving work.
    • [25:02] Politics aren't supposed to be our home. Our ultimate goal should be loving our neighbor and worshiping God.
    • [26:55] What makes politics so contentious is operating on the level of identity and community as opposed to policy.
    • [29:32] How to approach this political cycle differently.
    • [35:54] Part of respecting our differences is being honest about them.
    • [41:09] Unifying a divided nation starts at home and in our community.
