  • FASD, the FASCETS Neurobehavioral Model & Child Welfare with Patricia Kasper

Discover the groundbreaking FASCETS Neurobehavioral Model and its profound impact on understanding Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) within child welfare - essential listening for anyone passionate about improving the lives of children and families.

In this episode, Patti Kasper and I delved into a profound discussion centered around the FASCETS Neurobehavioral Model, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), and its implications in child welfare. The conversation was enlightening and touched on various critical aspects of these complex subjects.

Patti began by highlighting her extensive background in child welfare and her journey through different academic disciplines, including social work and psychology. Her diverse experiences led her to develop a deep passion for understanding and assisting children with FASD, a condition caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol.

One of the key takeaways from the conversation was the emphasis on viewing FASD as a developmental disorder that persists beyond childhood. Patti pointed out that this condition doesn't simply disappear when a child reaches a certain age, challenging the prevailing perception of FASD as a childhood disability. This understanding is crucial in ensuring that individuals with FASD receive adequate support throughout their lives.

The heart of the discussion revolved around the FASCETS Neurobehavioral Model, a tool that helps parents and caregivers understand and support children with FASD. Patti explained how this model focuses on identifying brain tasks, assessing what is easy and difficult for the child and tailoring support accordingly. This approach allows caregivers to provide individualized care and accommodations, helping children with FASD thrive.

Throughout the conversation, Patti passionately addressed the misconceptions and stigmas associated with FASD. She emphasized the need for a shift in societal perception, particularly regarding behavioral challenges. Patti urged parents and caregivers to consider that behaviors in children with FASD are not intentional choices but often the result of how their brains are wired.

We also discussed the parallel between FASD and other neurobehavioral conditions. Patti highlighted the importance of recognizing the unique wiring of each child's brain and advocated for the application of the FASCETS model to support children with various neurobehavioral conditions, whether diagnosed or not.

Our conversation also touched on the challenges faced by parents and caregivers, including the immense mental load of caregiving and the toll it takes on their own mental and physical health. Patti shared her own experiences as a caregiver for her mother, and the importance of self-care and support for caregivers.

Patti highlighted the urgent need to dispel the assumption that behaviors in individuals with neurobehavioral conditions are intentional choices. She stressed the importance of considering the role of their brains in shaping their behavior.

This conversation with Patti Kasper provided a comprehensive and insightful exploration of the FASCETS Neurobehavioral Model, FASD, and their broader implications in child welfare. We underscored the need for a shift in perception, increased understanding and tailored support to help individuals with FASD lead fulfilling lives. Patti's extensive knowledge and passionate advocacy for this cause made for a captivating and enlightening conversation.

  • Thriving with Disabilities with Aunia Kahn

Discover the power of authenticity and the importance of recognizing invisible challenges in this eye-opening episode – a must-listen for anyone committed to creating a more empathetic and inclusive world.

In this insightful episode, we engage in a candid and eye-opening conversation about the often misunderstood and underrepresented world of disabilities, mental health and invisible challenges. Aunia Kahn, who herself deals with invisible disabilities, brings a unique perspective that sheds light on the importance of empathy, understanding and inclusivity.

Our conversation begins with Aunia sharing her journey, highlighting the moment when she recognized her own disabilities, despite her initial hesitance to identify as a disabled person. She underscores the fact that many individuals, like herself, have invisible disabilities that are not immediately apparent to others. This creates a significant gray area in society where people may be dealing with disabilities or mental health issues without visible signs.

Aunia passionately advocates for normalizing the representation of disabled individuals in various aspects of life, including advertising and marketing. She stresses the significance of treating people with disabilities as human beings and emphasizes that they, too, want to be seen and treated as such. This involves engaging in respectful conversations, offering assistance when appropriate and, most importantly, asking for consent before helping.

Our discussion extends to children and the valuable lesson they can teach adults about approaching individuals with disabilities. Aunia points out that children often ask candid questions about disabilities, showing a genuine curiosity, while adults may shy away from such conversations. She encourages adults to adopt a similar curiosity and be open to learning from individuals with disabilities.

One recurring theme throughout the podcast episode is the importance of authenticity. Aunia speaks about her personal experiences, emphasizing the significance of being true to oneself and embracing one's uniqueness. She encourages people to let go of judgments, whether self-imposed or from others, and just be authentic. Authenticity, she believes, fosters a safe space for individuals to thrive and connect.

We talk about self-care and self-acceptance in this episode as well. Aunia shares her self-care routines, which include reaching out to friends, maintaining a balanced lifestyle and seeking help when needed. She advocates for being kind to oneself on challenging days and recognizing that self-improvement is an ongoing journey.

Aunia and I wrap up with a powerful message: everyone has the potential to connect with others when they are authentic. No matter how unique or different you might feel, there will always be someone out there who can connect with and appreciate your authentic self.

In summary, this podcast episode offers a profound exploration of the world of disabilities and mental health. Aunia's personal experiences and insights serve as a compelling reminder of the importance of empathy, inclusivity and authenticity in our interactions with others. We need a shift in perspective - one that recognizes and respects the experiences of individuals with invisible disabilities, ultimately leading to a more compassionate and understanding society.

As the creator of a mental health charity that seeks to reduce the stigma around mental health issues and provide valuable resources, Adam brings a unique and powerful perspective to the conversation. Our discussion traverses through various themes, initially addressing the misconceptions and challenges that individuals with mental health struggles frequently encounter. A poignant and recurring theme emerges, shedding light on the notion of a ruling class elitism within society. This perspective suggests that those who are neurotypical believe they possess authority over mental health narratives, often marginalizing and silencing those with mental health issues. Our conversation dismantles the inaccurate notion that discussing topics like suicide or trigger warnings fosters harmful thoughts. Instead, we emphasize the importance of creating a safe space for individuals to share their experiences without judgment.

Adam also opens up about his grief journey after the loss of his wife. His vulnerability and authenticity underscore the significance of candid discussions about mental health. We challenge stereotypes and emphasize the need for open conversations.

We also address the impact of cultural norms and historical perspectives on mental health. We passionately critique how attitudes in British society (and American too!) have hindered open conversations about mental health for generations. This perspective perpetuates the suffering of many individuals and underlines the necessity for change.

Our discussion also touches on the concept of chosen families—those formed through conscious connections—and how they hold equal significance to biological families. We challenge the misconception that family relationships are inherently nurturing and emphasize the importance of setting boundaries with toxic family members for one's well-being.

Throughout this thought-provoking episode, Adam and I both champion the destigmatization of mental health struggles and advocate for a society that encourages open dialogue. Our candid reflections, combined with our dedication to reducing stigma, underscore the importance of collective action and education. I hope our message resonates with listeners, inspiring them to challenge preconceived notions, foster understanding and create a safe space for all to share their mental health journeys.

In this episode, MommaFoxFire talks with Heather Schulien about Emotional Struggles in Adult Survivors of Childhood Abuse. Thank you so much for listening - be sure to like/review/rate/subscribe on your favorite podcast platform - any support is super helpful!

In this deeply insightful podcast episode, I am joined by Heather Schulien as she sheds light on the emotional struggles faced by adult survivors of childhood abuse. The conversation delves into the unique challenges folks encounter and offers practical tools and strategies for healing and self-empowerment.

We begin by acknowledging the emotional toll that childhood abuse can have on survivors and emphasizes the importance of seeking professional help. Recognizing that therapy may not always be accessible to everyone, Heather points out alternative resources, such as educational videos and books by experts.

A significant topic we explore in this discussion is the impact of childhood abuse on self-worth and self-perception. Adult survivors often grapple with feelings of inadequacy and negative self-image, which can hinder their emotional growth and interpersonal relationships. Heather shares an empowering exercise called "Roses and Thorns," a family exercise that fosters open communication and emotional intelligence among family members, helping survivors regain their self-worth and build healthier relationships.

Our conversation shifts to the vital role of self-compassion and self-care in the healing process. Heather emphasizes prioritizing well-being and seeking support from others. We encourage survivors to jot down their worries and tasks before bedtime to prevent intrusive thoughts, fostering a more restful sleep. Mindfulness practices, such as deep breathing exercises and guided meditation, are also something that can combat anxiety and promote emotional well-being.

This episode touches on the pervasive misconception that individuals should handle their emotional struggles alone. We challenge this belief and urge survivors to seek help, whether through therapy, support groups, or trusted friends and family. Understanding that it is okay to ask for assistance is essential for healing and growth.

We wrap up our conversation together by exploring the concept of perfectionism, which often plagues survivors of childhood abuse. Heather emphasizes that striving for perfection is unrealistic and unattainable, leading to further emotional distress. Instead, embracing imperfections and acknowledging one's accomplishments can help survivors build resilience and cultivate a more positive self-image.

Throughout the episode, Heather compassionately addresses the unique challenges faced by adult survivors of childhood abuse. She offers practical tools and techniques to help survivors navigate their emotional struggles and embark on a journey of healing and self-empowerment. This conversation serves as an empowering reminder that seeking support and practicing self-compassion are essential steps towards reclaiming emotional well-being and finding inner strength.
