In his new book “Broken: Can The Senate Save Itself And The Country?” Ira Shapiro details some of the Senate’s most prominent battles of the past decade, assesses the Senate’s performance during Trump’s first year in office, and explores various solutions to restore its integrity and influence. President Trump is scheduled to deliver his first formal State of the Union address to Congress and the nation on Jan. 30. On Jan. 29, Governance Studies at Brookings convened a panel of domestic policy experts to discuss what they hope to hear and what they expect to hear in this pivotal speech. Panelists explored which post-tax-bill priorities the president is likely to highlight—with an emphasis on how well they align with the priorities of his political base and with those of Congress.

On January 29, the Center for East Asia Policy Studies hosted a panel of experts to discuss the opportunities and challenges of disseminating Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) standards in two critical areas: the digital economy and internet governance, and competitive neutrality and state-owned enterprises. The United States and Japan share the goal of advancing these disciplines even after the American withdrawal from the TPP. Experts from Japan and the United States discussed strategies that each country can pursue in on-going or new trade negotiations to advance TPP rules in these critical areas.
