Antonio Machado wrote a line that has stayed with me for years.

Caminante, no hay camino. Se hace camino al andar.

Traveler, there is no path. The path is made by walking.

I find that line both liberating and terrifying in equal measure. And I think that's exactly right. Because the path you are walking — the one that is yours, that belongs to your particular Genius, your particular calling, your particular figure eight — is not something that was laid out before you arrived.

Spirituality means different things to different people. For some it's inseparable from religious faith. For others it's entirely secular — a felt sense of connection to something larger, a recognition that the individual life is embedded in something that extends beyond it. For others still, it's a word that carries enough baggage from past experiences that it needs to be approached slowly.

All of that is welcome here. And today we look at it as a strength. A VIA Strength.

Name the season and name what it's asking of you.

Because every season has an invitation. A specific quality of attention or courage or patience or presence that it requires. And when you name the season, you can hear the invitation more clearly.
