Earlier this month, the specter of unjust evictions in Sheikh Jarrah led to Israeli settler attacks on Palestinians, incendiary balloons and rockets from Hamas, Palestinian attacks on Jewish Israelis, and a heavy response from Israeli military and police. While Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire, hundreds of civilians are dead, many thousands in Gaza are displaced, millions are traumatized, and ethnic tensions inside Israel have boiled over into violence—threatening the future of Arab-Jewish coexistence.

To help us understand this crisis, we’re joined today by two guests who experienced it far too intimately: Khaled Gannam from the Gaza Strip, and Tamar Cohen-Mordechai from southern Israel.

On March 23, in the midst of a pandemic and economic crisis, Israel will hold its fourth election in two years. You read that correctly: After two rounds of voting in 2019 and one last year, Israel has been unable to form a stable government. Why does this keep happening? How does Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, now facing criminal charges, remain a top contender? Will this election break the cycle, or will Israelis head back to the polls in a matter of months?

To help us understand this unprecedented moment, we’re joined by veteran journalist Shmuel Rosner: editor of TheMadad.com and a senior fellow at the Jewish People Policy Institute. Rosner has also served as a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times and a political editor for the Jewish Journal.

For many years, conditions in the Gaza Strip have been dire. Among the issues faced there daily are high unemployment rates, travel restrictions, violence, a paucity of basic resources, political turmoil, and the blockades keeping residents confined in the small, overcrowded territory.

Now, with the coronavirus pandemic and prospect of Palestinian elections, 2021 is an especially precarious time in Gaza. To help us understand what is happening on the ground, we’re joined today by Professor Mkhaimar Abusada: an associate professor and chairman of the department of political science at Al-Azhar University in Gaza City.
