We review the works and discuss how the idea of “space” changes and evolves in virtual performances.

Oppy & Professor Communitas, an online performance presented by Five Arts Centre, is a new play by Leow Puay Tin that stages a life-changing encounter between a young actor and an aging professor. Directed by Fasyali Fadzly and featuring performers Faiq Syazwan Kuhiri and Iefiz Alaudin as well as the work of multimedia designer Syamsul Azhar, the play examines cultural politics, generational tension, and what it means to make art. We review the play, and discuss what the online medium can add to performances.

Pandemic art has taken many forms; in artist Sharon Chin’s Letters To What We Want, it is an amalgamation of writing, visual art, correspondence, and personal stories. The idea behind it is deceptively simple: a series of letters written by Sharon’s friends, responding to the question, “What do you want in 2021 and beyond?”. The format of the response was left open, as well as the choice to remain anonymous or use a pseudonym. In return, Sharon sends them one of her artworks. We review the project, and talk about the power of these personal narratives as a way of reflecting on and remembering a time that has been like no other.

Unity (1918) by Canadian playwright Kevin Kerr tells the story of a small town called Unity in Saskatchewan, Canada, amidst the 1918 flu pandemic that killed an estimated 20-50 million people worldwide - an apt play for our current times, and to reflect on the experiences and lessons of the past year. This Malaysian staging is a recorded performance directed by Tung Jit Yang and co-directed by Dawn Cheong, featuring 11 local actors, and is presented by the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre. Dashran Yohan of The Bigger Picture team joins us to review the play, and to discuss the power of stories from the past when reflecting on the present. Haris Rashid’s art exhibition, 3:33, is a surrealist exploration of emotions and themes that came up during the course of the COVID-19 pandemic and the various stages of Malaysia’s lockdown - but alongside the uncertainty and anxiety expressed in the works, Haris also infuses his works with magic, fantasy, and folklore. To review the exhibition, we are joined by artist and arts organiser Rupa Subramaniam, and we discuss the unexpected joys that are found in works created during a decidedly difficult time.
