In Episode 27, Danielle and Cheryl are joined again by guest Katelin Cashman, a PA who specializes in women’s midlife health, to talk about exercise in midlife. As estrogen packs up its bags and leaves, our bones change and become weaker, muscles get smaller, connective tissue weakens (hello, balance), we start to feel the wear and tear of osteoarthritis, and unexplained joint aches and muscle pains bounce around (they might evade medical tests, but they’re real – Kate validates it!). We find out that exercise is the answer to so many WTFs. Kate breaks down how it improves your cardio respiratory health, slows down weight gain, increases muscle mass and bone health, and betters your mental health. She also addresses what your weight actually means (hint: the number on the scale isn’t the info to focus on). She notes expert guidelines for cardio, as well as new and exciting strength training and balance recommendations. She touches on mid-life muscle mass loss (why your muscles don’t pop anymore after a workout) and how to fight that battle. Bonus: You can turn anything into a HIIT workout because any movement is better than no movement.

They discuss last wishes, planning for who is going to take your belongings and pets, and whether they’re going to need a bouncer at their funeral to keep out the people they don’t want there. They’re finding the humor in making practical decisions about what many might consider morbid.

To celebrate, they decided you should hear someone else talk for a change – so they invited Menopause Specialist Katelin Cashman, PA, back to talk about bone health in middle age women. While 50% to 85% of variation in bone mineral density is due to genetics (thanks mom), you can also make changes in your diet, lifestyle, weight training, and supplements to optimize your skeletal system. Katelin explains bone density (along with other metrics for bone health) and DEXA scans (the gold standard on measuring), and then helps you understand what those tests mean and how they can help you through your mid-life bone health journey. The World Health Organization estimates 30% of Caucasian post-menopausal women already have osteoporosis. Don’t be one of them. Like Cheryl. Cheryl is one of them.

With Danielle’s birthday coming up, Episode 24 is full of chatter about gifts and regifting. Going far beyond following trends, the trio has decided that platforms like TikTok and Instagram (influencers, they’re looking straight at you) are taking creativity away and pushing one similar look that lacks individuality. Cheryl, leaning on her early love of magazines that forged her career path, digs deep into the world of ‘80s glossies like Seventeen, Sassy and Teen Beat and how teens would grab a little inspiration from each to make their looks their own. Melissa believes it’s all performative these days – doing it for photos  – which would explain bizarre trends like Bed Parties and social media “hauls,” showing off and showing everyone what you bought for yourself or your kid.

Episode 21 begins with Cheryl’s admission that she’s weak – she colored her hair after six months of grey root grow out. Then she and Danielle discuss how we’re becoming new people in a sense as we age and it’s hard - saying goodbye to who we were, and embracing (although sometimes not too eagerly) who we are now. For example, they remember when going out was just a fun thing to do, even…gasp…last minute. Now we have to check the restaurant, check the parking, check the walking distance to the restaurant from the parking, and then we have to check ourselves, as we try to figure out what to wear (AKA what still fits). Once again, we spent years shaking our heads when our folks stressed out about going places and now that’s exactly what we’re doing.

Was Avril Lavigne right - is life just too complicated? In Episode 20, Danielle and Cheryl realize that in their 30s, they were just training to be an adult. Now, it’s go time. At this age, we have mortgages, kids, aging parents, career changes, ever-changing bodies, and the constant challenge of making everyone happy. A wise friend once explained that it’s because we’re trying to make everyone happy no one ends up being happy, while another mentioned that everyone wants change but no one’s actually implementing it. So here Danielle and Cheryl are, craving the simplicity of what they learned back in the day – getting out of quicksand (a skill they thought would play a bigger role in their adult lives than it actually has), playing the recorder, and square dance do-si-do-ing. They also touch upon modern complications like email hacking, 15-character passwords, two-step authentications, and how no one actually mails mail anymore.
