Today on Freedom Friday with Perry and Shawna no matter how deep our sin, our despair, our cynicism, God’s grace is deeper still. First, the mother bird could have flown to safety but refused to abandon her babies during a raging forest fire. Instead when the blaze swept in and the heat had scorched her small body, she had stayed. And under her petrified, scorched body came her three baby chicks, alive. This is the gospel. God’s wrath is fiery. But his love even more so. Then, a cynical, grumpy guy, was driving his daughter to school when they passed a cardboard sign on the side of the road that read “Honk if you’re happy.” He thought: “Who makes some cheesy sign like that and puts it on the side of the road. Stupid.” But he started honking. And it started changing him. And when he met the man who made the sign his transformation was made complete. It’s all about the power of giving thanks to free us from our cynicism. Finally, Brennan Manning author of Abba's child says that after he entered seminary, he went to a priest and told him about his bouts of heavy drinking during his three years in the Marines and how ashamed he was. What the priest said to him rocked his world. It’s about how God takes our worst failures and uses them to bring about the greatest good, for us and others. Let freedom ring!
