What happens when a doctor of thirty-five years ends up as a patient in the part of the system she thought she understood?
In this episode, Heather Zimmerman sits down with Liz Casper, former medical doctor, artist, and author of Brilliant, Beautiful, Bipolar and Learning to Heal, for a conversation about diagnosis, dying, coming back, and what she believes has to change.
Liz shares:
· The accident at age seven that killed her brother, and decades of carrying its aftermath before anyone had language for it
· Dropping out of an Ivy League program, a detour through business in New York, and starting medical school at twenty-seven
· Years of being told she had depression, and medications that seemed to make things worse rather than better
· The 2018 unraveling, and eighteen months that took her through Los Angeles, psych wards, and jail
· Being diagnosed with bipolar disorder at fifty-four, and coming to terms with what managing it actually asks of her
· What she saw inside psychiatric units as a physician, and how different it looked as a patient
· The disparity at the center of her argument: treated as medical royalty with cancer, discharged from a psych ward onto the street with no shoes
· Her near-death experience during chemotherapy, told in full and in her own words
· Why her third book in progress is tentatively called The Gift of Bipolar
· What she believes has to change about mental health care in this country, from someone who has been the doctor and the patient
| Content note: this episode includes discussion of suicide, psychiatric hospitalization, and cancer. If you are struggling, support is available. In the US you can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
FIND LIZ CASPER
Liz Casper is a former medical doctor and author of two books. In BRILLIANT, BEAUTIFUL, BIPOLAR she writes about her life around her diagnosis with bipolar disorder at age fifty-four, showing what actively manic thinking is like from the inside and ending with a message of hope and resilience. In LEARNING TO HEAL she moves through medical school, residency, private practice, and her own experience as a cancer patient, sharing what being an allopathic physician and a patient is really like. Liz is now retired and spends her days writing and speaking on mental health issues. She believes it is time to change the way we care for the mentally ill, and she brings a perspective few people have, as a former physician and as a patient herself.
