Belgic Confession Articles 8-9

This sermon describes the key, biblical teaching about Jesus in His deity and humanity. The author of Hebrews cites Psalm 8:4-6 from the Greek OT and applies it to both humans as "son of man" and Jesus as the "Son of Man." In the original creation, the non-human creation was subjected to Adam as the first man. Psalm 8 comments on that. Jesus in His incarnation is man who is "a little lower than angels." The comment on this within Hebrews speaks of the "not yet" of God's promises. Adam as man sinned and lost his status and was left with death and the fallen creation. Jesus as the last Adam subjected Himself to suffering and death to make possible the future glorification of man. Jesus has been crowned with glory and honor in His exaltation to the right hand of God. He is the supreme "Son of Man" who is the promised Messiah. He suffered on behalf of fallen man so that those who believe in Him are promised to be brought into God's presence. We do not now "see" all things subjected to man, but we "see," through the eyes of faith, Jesus crowned with glory and honor. We must believe God's promises concerning the 'not yet' future of man and know we will participate in final victory.

The sermon analyzes 1 Timothy 5 and 6, arguing that the church functions as a spiritual family where members must treat one another with familial respect rather than institutional rigidity. It interprets the term 'elders' primarily as older individuals in need of care and support, while also addressing the proper procedures for church discipline and the necessity of evidence before rebuke. The preacher emphasizes that correction must occur in God's presence without prejudice, partiality or haste to maintain spiritual purity and avoid becoming obsessed with sin.
