Welcome to the Evolve Beyond Limits Podcast with Stacy Gissal
Trigger Warning (TW): In this episode, Mo shares such a powerful, difficult story about child abuse.
My friend Mo Copeland and I sat down to talk about his journey of transformation and have a heart-led conversation about everything from his upbringing, his faith, and the lessons he’s learned along the way.
After years of living in stuck patterns that he inherited, Mo flipped the script on his life and began to explore how to create a life and an authentic and true him. He’s actually writing a book about his experiences.
Join us as we talk about:
- How everything we need is within us (how amazing is that!)
- Why we’re so hard on ourselves (we think we understand ourselves) and how we can overcome this
- How we can overcome the pressure of other people’s expectations
- What faith means to Mo and his theology
Hang on to the very end for the post-show with me! Something I really took away was “Everything is created out of the darkness. Doing what your heart and soul are calling for is often what you need to grow and evolve. Sometimes this is found in the chaos and the darkness.” I encourage you to journal about this week.

I wasn’t there when you were born.
I didn’t squeeze you from between my thighs
Sweating and moaning and pushing.
I didn’t smile proudly at your arrival
I simply knew nothing of it since I wasn’t there
Oblivious living my own existence
I didn’t raise you or teach you
I didn’t form you into some version of myself
No presuppositions passed along
We didn’t play catch or chase
No tickle fights or bedtime stories told
I wasn’t there as you were broken
Bent under the weight of your difference
Shaped by a world of intolerance
Your fear and aloneness echoed
In lonely rooms, gymnasiums and prom dances
No one could hear the sound of it
But you stood, brave little fucker
You stood and lifted a finger to the world
Of people held captive by their notions
You came out of the closet swinging
Proving who your enemies were
What unconditional love feels like
Or perhaps you never got it
Never daring to dream you were worthy of such a gift
Maybe you settled for tolerance
For just not being battered and broken
But I am now and I love you dearly
We are still different on the surface
But underneath our oneness lies quietly
A thermocline of warmer water
You are my son or daughter
Though in truth I’ve never gazed with love upon you
I wrap you in my long arms
Squeeze you tightly into my being
You belong here my child of sorrow
Maybe we’ll weep together
Crying out the pent-up brokenness
Or laugh until our sides ache
I’m finally here sweet darling
I love you and you’re worthy of it
Reclaim the broken kid inside
Let’s make the little fellow welcome
