  • EPS07:027 [Damian Kernahan] Understand Your Customers

Welcome to the Evolvepreneur (After Hours) Show

I am your Special Host Richard Wray

Join me today where we dig deep with our guests and get you the best concepts and strategies to fast-track your business.

My very special guest today is Damian Kernahan ...

Damian started his career in marketing working for companies like Foster's and Diageo. He realized that while companies talk about being customer-centric, they often lack a deep understanding of their customers' needs. Proto Partners helps businesses gain this clarity and confidence by deeply understanding what customers want and delivering that.

They follow a 9 step process involving gaining clarity, creating a prioritized plan, and building a customer mindset within the organization. An important secret is focusing on universal customer needs rather than personas. Damian advises entrepreneurs to have the confidence to admit they don't have all the answers and be open to change.

    Key Moments:

    • Understanding your customers deeply and focusing on what matters most to them is key to unlocking growth for a business.
    • As businesses grow and scale, they tend to lose touch with their customers and rely more on their own assumptions instead of truly understanding customer needs.
    • Large organizations often talk about putting customers at the center but fail to actually implement it in a meaningful way.
    • Asking the right questions and having open conversations with customers can provide valuable insights for businesses to improve.
    • Focusing on the core customer needs rather than specific personas can simplify how a business delivers for customers.
    • Having an external party conduct customer research can provide more honest and candid feedback.
    • Customers just want businesses to help them get on with their lives more easily and with less stress.
    • Being open to change and feedback, even as a young marketer, can help one grow and improve.
    • Democratizing customer experience knowledge through checklists and how-to guides can help smaller businesses.
    • Measuring improvements is important to see that changes are having a positive impact.

    • EPS06:32 [Tamara Pflug] Self-Coach for Business Growth

Welcome to the Evolvepreneur (After Hours) Show

I am your Special Host Mechelle McDonald

Join me today where we dig deep with our guests and get you the best concepts and strategies to fast-track your business.

My very special guest today is Tamara Pflug ...

Tamara, a fun and confidence coach, discusses simple ways to coach yourself to grow your business. She emphasizes paying attention to your thoughts and tapping into your intuition to move forward. Accepting where you are now and focusing on serving your customers from a place of abundance can help you release anxiety and worry. Understanding that your current state is enough can bring relief and freedom to grow your business beyond. Learning to have fun and love yourself along the way can make all the difference in your entrepreneurial journey.

      Key Moments:

      • Focus on serving your customers and bringing them value, rather than focusing on yourself. Put the customer's needs first.
      • Trust your intuition and first ideas. Your first guess is often your best answer.
      • Accept negative emotions and doubts as part of the growth process. Don't try to fight them, but put them in the "backseat" while you keep driving forward.
      • Pay attention to your thoughts and question negative thoughts that hold you back. Observe them without believing them.
      • Set goals from a place of abundance, not lack. Focus on how you can serve from that place.
      • Be present and accept where you are now in your business. You are enough as you are.
      • Have fun and enjoy the journey, not just the end goal.
      • Learn from every experience and ask yourself what you can do differently next time.
      • Connect with your customers authentically and share your humanity.
      • Build your confidence by taking small consistent actions, not waiting until you feel "ready".

      • EPS05:35 [Marques Ogden] The True Power Of An Unbreakable Mindset

Welcome to the Evolvepreneur (After Hours) Show

I am your Special Host Christine Campbell Rapin

Join me today where we dig deep with our guests and get you the best concepts and strategies to fast-track your business.

My very special guest today is Marques Ogden ...

Marques, a former NFL offensive lineman, retired after 5 years to pursue construction and contracting. He founded Kayden Premier Enterprises at 27, which saw rapid growth but eventually went bankrupt, losing nearly $2 million on a project. Marques then worked as a custodian and rebuilt his life, becoming an inspirational keynote speaker, coach, author, and marketing leader. He filed for bankruptcy in 2013 but used this rock-bottom experience to motivate his new career. He partnered with Don, focusing on content, marketing, and social media. Scaling the business and creating passive income streams posed challenges. His podcast became a valuable tool for growing his network and brand. Marques maintains a resilient mindset by remembering his darkest times of losing everything.

        Key Moments:

        • Marcus lost his construction company in 2013 and hit rock bottom, working as a custodian for $8.25 an hour. That was his wake up call to start speaking and coaching.
        • Marcus started his business in 2013 but didn't get his first paid job until 2016. It took perseverance and grit to climb out of the hole.
        • Failure is not fatal. Embracing failures and learning from them is important for business growth.
        • Marcus realized that making money was not true value. His value came from helping others through his message.
        • Marcus' first hire was his business partner Don who helped him with content, social media, and other tasks while they both learned together.
        • Scaling the business has been challenging, especially creating residual income streams.
        • Marcus' podcast has been very successful in growing his network, brand awareness, and potential revenue.
        • Marcus remembers what it felt like to lose everything to maintain his unbreakable mindset and never go back to his ego-driven past.
        • Hiring people aligned with his vision has been important for Marcus' team growth.
        • Marcus' app is a new way for people to access his content and brand.

Welcome to the Evolvepreneur (After Hours) Show

I am your Special Host Mechelle McDonald

Join me today where we dig deep with our guests and get you the best concepts and strategies to fast-track your business.

My very special guest today is Kasey Anton ...

Kasey Anton, a former restaurateur turned bookkeeper and small business consultant, found her passion in helping entrepreneurs succeed. She emphasizes the importance of alone time for recharging and taught high school students the value of connecting with customers through a snack shack. In her book, Profit First for Restaurants, she advises restaurants to base expenses on average days for profitability.

Collecting customer information and celebrating special occasions fosters loyalty and revenue. Kasey's experience and unique perspective make her a perfect fit for the Evolvepreneur podcast, where she aims to inspire others on their entrepreneurial journey.

          Key Moments:

          • Alone time and self-care is important for entrepreneurs to recharge and be productive, not a luxury. It's a necessity to avoid running on fumes.
          • Building a restaurant business model based on peak nights like Saturday is a mistake. Focus on the average and break even point to ensure profitability.
          • Collecting customer information like birthdays and anniversaries through comment cards allows restaurants to build loyalty through personalized offers and greetings.
          • Hospitality and customer service are skills that today's youth may lack due to less exposure through jobs. They can be taught these skills.
          • Profit is important for a business's survival, not just greed. It allows businesses to reinvest, buy equipment, and service debt.
          • Building and nurturing a community through connecting with customers, remembering details, and personalizing experiences creates loyalty.
          • Simple gestures like remembering customers' names and birthdays can create strong bonds of loyalty.
          • Offers and promotions targeted at specific customer groups based on collected information can drive significant sales.
          • Teaching teenagers skills like hospitality and customer service can positively impact their future endeavors.
          • The book Profit First for Restaurants aims to teach restaurant owners how to transform their business into a cash-making machine through a focus on profitability.

Tiffany Hoeft is an operations consultant who helps creative entrepreneurs identify, strategize and implement business systems to scale their businesses while maintaining work-life balance. • Building an audience of potential buyers is key for business success.
            • Implementing good business systems can help create long-term success.

              Key Moments:

              • Diversity and inclusion efforts can improve business performance by up to 35% by attracting and retaining diverse talent and improving productivity.
              • Representation matters as it inspires underrepresented groups by showing them that success is possible for them too.
              • Organizations need to support and develop trailblazers from underrepresented groups to inspire more people.
              • Cluster hiring can become siloed and people may feel they were only hired for their identity, so organizations need to integrate and develop individuals holistically.
              • Diversity and inclusion are good business practices that help organizations hire the best talent and build products for diverse customers.
              • Returns on diversity and inclusion investments can take 1-2 years to show in increased revenue.
              • Seniors and people with disabilities are underutilized talent pools that organizations are not tapping into.
              • Inclusion happens when people's expertise is valued regardless of their role or background. This can improve projects and meet client needs better.
              • Having a strong support network is important for entrepreneurs to persevere through challenges.
              • Inclusive cultures require unlearning biases and rewiring ways of thinking to see what else is possible.

With a background in Commercial Analytics and Revenue Management, Armin brings expertise in revenue growth analytics. He curates the bi-weekly newsletter Revology Analytics Insider, offering unique insights. Armin holds an MBA from the Darden School of Business, with additional studies in AI/ML from the University of Washington and MIT. Based in Charlotte, NC, he assists companies in optimizing pricing, margins, and sales through flexible analytics solutions. Emphasizing practical implementation, he collaborates closely with company experts. Armin's notable achievement includes challenging established thinking with data-driven insights for a retailer client.

                Key Moments:

                • Armin's work focuses on commercial analytics to help companies optimize pricing, maximize profits, and grow sales and customers. He builds "good enough" solutions that deliver value fast.
                • Speed, flexibility, and adoption are key benefits of Armin's approach to commercial analytics solutions.
                • Armin surfaces insights and information for clients that they were previously unaware of, which sometimes challenges their status quo.
                • Armin became a solopreneur when he realized that most of his corporate job involved perception management and politics rather than hands-on analytics work, which he prefers.
                • Early successes for Armin came from having a strong network and delivering good results for clients, even in industries he was unfamiliar with.
                • Armin finds that when clients push back on his work, it often means they care and are engaged. He meets with them to understand their perspectives.
                • An example project that made a big impact was challenging the fundamental thinking and business model of a traditional retailer based on Armin's analytics and insights.
                • Armin advises entrepreneurs to establish a routine that includes dedicating time to work on business development, content, and marketing.
                • Armin says the smaller your business, the more important it is to be a niche expert in a particular vertical or function.

My very special guest today is Jane Nicola Douglas ...

Jane, a UK musician and music therapist in Shanghai for 14 years, embraced her unplanned journey abroad. Adapting her music to the new culture, she stayed true to her artistic vision. During COVID, she launched a podcast to stay connected. Jane believes artists are open, receptive, and adaptable while staying authentic. She passionately promotes the arts for self-expression, well-being, and cultural unity.

                  Key Moments:

                  • Jane found her passion for music and travel at an early age and decided to pursue it by moving abroad to China. She started teaching English but soon got back into music.
                  • An artist is defined by Jane as someone who is versatile, adaptable, open, and receptive. An artist finds ways to utilize their talents in different situations.
                  • The arts are multi-dimensional and go beyond just visual arts. They allow people to find their voice and connect with others.
                  • Children should be given opportunities to explore the arts as it builds confidence, wellbeing and helps them express themselves.
                  • Starting your day with the right music can set the rhythm and mood for the rest of the day.
                  • Jane's biggest challenge was the strict COVID lockdown in China which disrupted her music and travel. She pivoted by creating a podcast show.
                  • Jane thrives on challenges as they propel her forward. She does not take "no" for an answer.
                  • Jane describes her music genre as "soul folk" as she could not find the right genre to fit her style in the UK.
                  • Being authentic and tapping into one's creativity is important for entrepreneurs.
                  • Including music in one's daily routine can enhance life in many ways.

My very special guest today is Kim Graham ...

Kim started her business after she and her husband paid off $76,000 of student loan debt in 28 months. She realized many business owners don't manage their finances well despite high revenue. She initially thought people wanted budgets, but learned they wanted results and accountability. She shifted her messaging and offerings to focus on transformation and proximity, which allowed her to charge more. Her next goal is to retire her husband and build their business together by helping couples communicate better about finances. To achieve this, she is investing in networking groups to reach more clients.
