  • Ep115 Excellence Beyond The Finish Line

What keeps you running when winning is no longer possible? In 1964, Sri Lankan Olympic runner Ranatunge Karunananda found the answer in the most unlikely place. Lapped repeatedly in the 10,000 metres final, he kept running long after the winner had finished and the crowd had stopped laughing. He had no medal to win, no position to improve and no applause to chase. He simply refused to stop.

His story offers a powerful lesson for leaders and organisations: excellence cannot depend on targets, rewards or the latest improvement program. The tools will change, leaders will leave and the scoreboard will disappear. What matters is what remains when they do. Because true excellence is not a program. It is a standard you refuse to abandon.

  • Ep114 The Hidden Cost of Small Inefficiencies

Small inefficiencies are easy to dismiss. One extra piece of paper, one unnecessary approval, one duplicate report or one additional click hardly seems worth worrying about. But frequency changes everything. When a small inefficiency is repeated thousands or millions of times, it becomes significant.

Worse, efforts to improve efficiency can simply move waste somewhere else. A cheaper paper towel might mean people use two instead of one. A faster process in one department might create more work for another. A lower purchasing cost might lead to more failures or replacements. True operational excellence isn't about making individual activities cheaper or faster. It's about improving the whole system and creating more value. The question isn't simply "What did we save?" It's "Where did the waste go?"

  • Ep113 People Resist Exclusion, Not Change

The best ideas don't fail because they're wrong—they fail because people weren't part of creating them. Leaders often spend weeks refining a change before announcing it, then wonder why they face resistance. The problem isn't the change itself; it's that everyone else is hearing it for the first time. Lasting change comes from involving people early, listening to their concerns and giving them a sense of ownership.

Before launching any initiative, identify who will be affected, who holds influence and who may need extra support. Great leaders don't rely on authority or perfectly crafted presentations—they build trust through curiosity, conversation and collaboration. After all, people are far more likely to support a solution they helped create than one handed to them.

  • Ep112 From Johannesburg to the Boardroom: Lessons in Leadership – Mike Allen

What does it really take to build a world-class factory floor? Mike Allen is a 25-year supply chain veteran who's led operations across Kellogg, a family-owned giant, and Haleon (Panadol, Advil, Sensodyne). Drawing on his time navigating South Africa's distinct operational pace and three separate attempts to establish Kellogg's continuous improvement program, Mike offers his insights on organisational culture, change fatigue, and why tools alone rarely produce lasting results.

He outlines his six core leadership fundamentals, discusses the value of structured observation as a development practice, and reflects on the question he believes every supply chain leader should be asking: where is our greatest vulnerability? It’s a thoughtful conversation on humility, capability building, and sustainable leadership in modern manufacturing.

  • Ep111 Why Great Ideas Stay Hidden at Work

The greatest untapped asset in most organisations isn’t technology, strategy or even talent – it’s the ideas people never share. Ishan highlights Ferrari's transition to electric vehicles as a subtle leadership challenge: inviting celebrated external designers may broaden perspectives, but it can also unintentionally tell employees that the next breakthrough won't come from them.

The result is a workforce full of knowledge and experience that never reaches the people making decisions. Innovation slows, engagement declines, and opportunities are missed.

High-performing organisations understand that leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about creating an environment where people feel safe to question, contribute and improve. Every organisation has the potential to unlock far more of its collective intelligence—it simply needs leaders who know how to invite it.

  • Ep110 The NASA mindset behind world-class excellence

The biggest moments of success are rarely won in the spotlight. They’re earned long before anyone is watching. Using NASA’s Artemis program as a powerful case study, Ishan reveals why excellence isn’t built by heroic last-minute efforts, but through disciplined preparation, rigorous thinking and systems designed to withstand failure.

From testing assumptions to confronting uncomfortable realities, the lessons behind deep space exploration have striking parallels for every business. Why do great organisations obsess over what could go wrong? Why does reality always beat the plan? And why do reliable systems outperform individual brilliance? If you want to build an organisation where success is repeatable rather than accidental, this episode offers a compelling blueprint for unlocking excellence before the pressure is on.

  • Ep109 Robotics, People and Process – Paul Mason

Paul Mason is a mechatronics engineer, computer scientist and CEO of Robotics Australia Group, the peak body for Australia’s robotics and automation sector. He also co-hosts the Manufacturing Tech Australia podcast and has spent more than two decades helping businesses improve manufacturing, design, commercialisation and technology adoption.

Paul explains why many businesses misunderstand robotics, from assuming it is unaffordable to treating it as a silver bullet for productivity. He and Ishan explore Australia’s low robot density, the importance of independent advice, and why broken processes should be fixed before technology is added. They also cover cobots, humanoid robots, AI, vibe coding, future skills, leadership, and why communication, problem-solving and people-first thinking matter more than ever.

  • Ep108 Eliminating Complexity: The Qantas Strategy Behind Long-Term Excellence

The biggest breakthroughs rarely come from working harder. They come from removing what no longer serves a purpose. Drawing on Qantas’ remarkable Project Sunrise and the legendary Double Sunrise flights of World War II, Ishan reveals why sustainable excellence is built through simplification, smart design and empowering people, not relentless effort.

Organisations achieve extraordinary results when they eliminate unnecessary complexity, design around constraints instead of fighting them, and involve the people closest to the work in creating better systems. Whether leading a team, running a business or improving a process, the path to exceptional performance is surprisingly simple. Lighten the load, embrace reality and build solutions with your people, not just for them. Excellence is rarely about doing more. It is about carrying less and designing better.

  • Ep107 Want Better Results? Remove Friction, Don’t Add Pressure

Success is rarely unlocked by adding more. More often, it comes from removing the friction that quietly slows people down every day.

Behavioural economist Rory Sutherland has long argued that people experience the world psychologically, not objectively. One of his most famous examples involved an airport reducing baggage complaints not by speeding up the process, but by increasing the distance passengers walked to collect their luggage. The wait barely changed, yet the experience improved dramatically.

The lesson for organisations is profound. Leaders often focus on efficiency, systems and process design, while employees experience complexity, confusion and frustration. The highest-performing organisations make good behaviour easier by simplifying processes, reducing unnecessary effort and removing obstacles. Sometimes the fastest path to excellence is simply eliminating what gets in the way.

  • Ep106 The RED Waste: How Rework, Excess and Delay Destroy Momentum

Many organisations believe better results come from working harder, adding more resources or finding stronger leaders. In reality, the greatest barrier to performance is often hidden within the system itself.

Nature offers an unexpected lesson. Canada geese can fly up to 70 per cent further as a flock than they can alone, not because they expend more effort, but because they operate within a highly efficient system. They communicate constantly, reduce unnecessary effort through formation, and share leadership responsibilities throughout the journey.

The same principles apply in business. Three common forces quietly undermine performance: rework caused by poor alignment, excess created by unnecessary complexity, and delay resulting from over-reliance on a handful of key people. Together, these hidden drains consume capacity, slow progress and erode momentum.

Excellence is rarely the result of individual heroics. It emerges when systems are designed to reduce friction, distribute responsibility and help people move forward together.
