This week, we shift from theory into execution, and it starts with understanding how the M&A process really works.
In this session, you'll get a breakdown of the typical stages of an exit:
What actually happens
Who gets involved
What to prepare for
Where most founders lose control — and how you won't
But more importantly, we'll talk about how to optimize the process so you're not reacting — you're leading. This isn't just about selling a company. It's about designing an outcome.
ExercisesThis phase is where community becomes a key part of your growth.
We're not doing this in a vacuum — and you shouldn't either.
You've got two quick but important tasks this week:
Who you are
What your company does
One personal detail
And one honest thought on exits (your goals, fears, questions — whatever's real for you)
The founders who get the most out of OPTION 3 aren't just consuming. They're participating.
They're building clarity and community, and both are part of what makes big outcomes possible.
By now, you've built clarity, created momentum, and started crafting a strategy that aligns your business with your bigger goals.
This session is about making sure you're fully equipped to execute.
Inside, we'll walk through the most important ExitDNA tools, frameworks, and templates — the ones you'll come back to again and again as you build toward optionality and maximum value.
These are tools we use with real founders to drive real outcomes.
Take time this week to review the tools highlighted in this session. Ask yourself:
Which ones am I already using?
Which ones could immediately help clarify or accelerate what I'm building?
Which ones do I need to commit to using more intentionally?
You don't need to use everything at once. But the more you integrate these tools into how you operate, the more leverage you'll build, and the easier it becomes to create real options.
Keep them close. Use them often. They're yours.
Not every founder exits by choice.
Sometimes life, markets, or circumstances force your hand.
But when you do have the luxury of time, perspective, and planning, your outcome can shift dramatically.
This session is about understanding the key factors that should guide your decision-making around whether and when to sell.
We'll walk through the major dimensions that matter:
Personal readiness
Financial position
Market timing
Business readiness
Strategic alignment
This is a reflective one, but don't underestimate its power.
📌 Brainstorm Notes on the 5 Key Factors
Use the chart from the session slides and start jotting down notes, issues, or opportunities under each category.
You can do this in your notebook, your journal, a doc — whatever works best for you.
This isn't about finding answers right now, it's about seeing clearly.
Often, this exercise will surface insights and next steps you didn't know you needed.
Many of these ideas will become actionable later, so keep your notes accessible.
This is where we flip the lens.
You're not just building a valuable business — you're starting to shape the story that will make it irresistible.
Buyers don't just pay for what is…
They pay for what could be — when it's told the right way.
In this session, we'll start the process of building your exit story:
What makes your business exciting
What opportunities lie ahead
Why your company stands out
And how to frame your narrative so it drives your value up
Let's start building your narrative in a real, grounded way.
Write in future tense (as if it's already happened)
Pull ideas from your Great Outcome
Use short bullet points to sketch it out
Don't worry about perfection. The goal is clarity and confidence.
You're not just building a business, you're creating something people want to be part of.
This story is how they start to believe it's possible.
Let's make it one worth telling.
We're diving into the real engine behind great exits: value creation.
You'll get into the core elements that make a business more desirable, more defensible, and more valuable, whether you're selling soon or not.
We'll walk through:
What actually drives value
Why companies buy
Who the buyers really are
And how to start aligning what you're building with what the market wants
More than just a strategy, this is the lens that will help you design every move from here on out.
ExercisesThese two tools will help you go from ideas → action → long-term leverage. They'll help you think and operate like someone who's designing an exceptional outcome.
Don't rush them. Revisit them. Grow them.
Welcome to the Accelerator.
This first session is designed to give you a quick overview of what to expect, how this phase works, how it builds on the ExitDNA Runway, and what mindset you need to bring to get the most out of it.
You'll get a refresher on some of the foundational concepts we covered in the Runway, but more importantly, this is your chance to shift gears from prep… into action.
EXERCISEBefore we jump into new strategies, let's make sure the groundwork is solid.
Your first task is simple but essential:
✅ Make sure you've completed all of the ExitDNA Runway exercises.
That includes:
Your Great Outcome
Football Field Valuation
If anything is still in draft mode — go finish it now.
📝 When you're ready, send your completed materials to: [email protected]
This step matters. It's not just a check-the-box moment — it's how we support you moving forward.
Once that's done, you're ready to move forward into the strategic work that builds value.
You've just done what most founders never take the time to do, you've started building real clarity, real options, and a real foundation for what's ahead.
That alone puts you in rare company.
But this is just the beginning.
Before you move forward, we'd love for you to share the key materials you worked through during the Runway.
Getting them out of your head and onto paper is part of stepping fully into this next phase.
When you're ready, send your materials to:
Here's what to send:
Your Great Outcome (your draft narrative)
Football Field Valuation
It doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to be yours.
We're here to help you sharpen it, build on it, and keep you moving toward the future you're building.
Again, great work getting here. Most never even start. Let's keep going!
The Founder's Journey™ is a concept I developed after working with hundreds of entrepreneurs, studying how they go from idea… to building… to exit.
It's designed to help you see two important things clearly:
Where you are right now.
What has to shift to get where you want to go.
It also serves as a reminder that building something valuable and lasting isn't easy, and that's exactly why the work matters.
One of my favorite ways to think about this journey is through the image of a mountain.
Building something valuable isn't a straight line. It's a climb full of tough stretches, unexpected turns, and moments where you question whether it's worth it.
The mountain reminds me that:
When you see the journey this way, as a series of deliberate steps toward something meaningful, it gets easier to embrace the work ahead.
Every move you make with intention gets you closer to your summit.
To bring this all to life, take a few minutes to listen the lesson.
Let it sink in.
Think about where you are on the mountain right now and where you want to go next.
Taking the First Step: Football Field Valuation
Now that you're thinking differently about your journey, it's time to get a quick, honest snapshot of where your business stands today, through the eyes of the market.
👉 Download the Football Field Valuation Workbook - Use it to gather your basic numbers and understand the concept.
👉 Complete the Football Field Valuation Sheet - Share it back with us (you can email it, or better yet, share a copy of your sheet).
The Key QuestionOnce you complete your Football Field Valuation, ask yourself honestly:
Would I sell my company today for a price within 10% of the middle multiple range?
Example:
If your business is doing $500k in EBITDA, and your middle EBITDA multiple is 7x… would you sell today for about $3.5M?
If the answer is NO, you're in good company. Most founders believe their businesses are worth more, and ExitDNA is here to help you close that gap.
If the answer is YES, you're already in a strong position. But there's still an opportunity to maximize your outcome even further.
Creating a bigger outcome won't happen by accident.
It happens because you see clearly, think intentionally, and act boldly.
You're already on the mountain. Now let's start climbing with purpose.
This might be the most important shift you make during your time in ExitDNA.
If you don't have a clear, compelling vision for where you're going — a Great Outcome — you'll either stall… or end up somewhere you never really wanted to be.
In this session, we're going to get brutally honest about what you're building, why it matters, and what it looks like when you win.
As you listen, ask yourself:
If everything works exactly the way I want it to… what does my life and business actually look like?
Am I operating today like someone who's committed to making that future real?
When you're done, take a few minutes while the ideas are still fresh and start sketching out your personal Great Outcome.
Don't over-polish it. Don't censor yourself. This isn't for a pitch deck, this it's for you.
Imagine it's already happened.
Write it as if it's real.
Examples:
Specific milestones you've hit (revenue, exits, ownership structure, team dynamics, personal life).
The impact you've made.
How your life feels after you've achieved it.
Before we get too far down the path, we want to make sure you don't miss something that trips up even the most successful entrepreneurs:
Skipping the foundation.
It's easy to think that because you've built something real, like revenue, team, and traction, you can jump straight to the complex stuff.
But in reality, the biggest outcomes come from mastering the basics first and building from there.
This session is a quick reminder of why foundational work isn't optional but essential.
As you go through it, be honest with yourself:
The strongest companies (and the best exits) don't come from hacks or hustle, they come from solid fundamentals executed consistently.
Everything you're about to build through ExitDNA — your value, your leverage, your freedom — is only as strong as the foundation you lay right now.
You don't need to stop everything and rebuild. You just need to see the gaps clearly and commit to strengthening them as you move forward.
