Protests in Iran continued over the weekend sparked by the murder of 22 year old Mahsa Amini who was arrested a few weeks ago by the Guidance Patrol, the religious morality police of Iran’s government who arrested Amini for not wearing the hijab. The most recent protests were met with a brutal response from the Revolutionary Guards who have promised even tougher crackdowns in response to people taking the street.

We are joined by Wendy DeSouza, adjunct professor of Iranian studies in the Middle East South Asia program at UC Davis, who teaches courses on women and gender in Iran. She is also author of the 2019 book Unveiling Men: Modern Masculinities in Twentieth-Century Iran. We are also joined by Khury Peterson-Smith, Michael Ratner Middle East Fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies, where he researches US empire, borders, and migration.
