There are two aspects to crime that every law enforcement officer must meet up with and face head on - and that is the sewer and the abyss - as Dr Mellor explains. The sewer is the disgusting parts of crime and the dregs of society. The urine, blood, guts, decaying bodies, murder and rape crime scenes, the outward part of crime.


The abyss is the why. WHY would someone stab another human being 60 times? WHY would someone steal the last dollars of an elderly persons social security check? That's actually the more disturbing part of dealing with criminals, because sometimes there is no why. That's just who they are, and for most of us that's VERY hard to deal with.
