Extraneous: His Dark Materials

The season is over, and we have a LOT of thoughts. We go over our favorite and least favorite parts of this season of television, and give out some awards — such as the illustrious "Glenn Close in West Wing" award for the best minor role, and the "Boreal in Memorial" award for, well, we're really not sure. Plus, we catch up on our mailbag!

NEXT WEEK: We start The Amber Spyglass!

This finale is full of dead things: Jopari, a few witches, many Magisterium (Magisteri?), and, lest we forget, our beloved aeronaut. But we are also waving goodbye to the deftness -- and dare we say subtlety -- that characterized much of this season, as we found this finale a bit inert. Come along with us as we break it all down and try to buck ourselves up, as we finish season two of the His Dark Materials television show.

In episode three, we contemplate the hazards of trusting anyone with a spider daemon, eavesdrop on a remarkable conversation between Lee and Mrs. Coulter, and watch Mary Malone do Mary Malone things (it’s...science?). Also Lyra and Will face off against Boreal the Curatorial, and two of our favorite non-humans have some sweet hangs!

In episode two, we meet Mary Malone (Simone Kirby), and nothing else matters, because she is the best and we want to hang out with her wearing kicks, drinking beer, and eating stale biscuits all the time. Don't you? Also: Boreal is a creeporeal, McPhail fails WAY up, and the show makes perhaps the greatest foreshadow in the HISTORY OF ALL TELEVISION (okay, we just like it, and we're emotional) with a trip to the Botanic Gardens.

Are you ready to dive really deep into this big, beautiful, budget-ey, biworldy second season? It's His Dark Materials, SEASON TWO! Will and Melissa do some redux on the first episode of the BBC/HBOMax series and we are very very very optimistic about what's to come. Also, we see Cittagazze, we spy some specters, the Lady of Bear Island has returned, and we attend a Florence and the Machine concert (aka a witchmoot).
