A Brahmin walking down the road hears a tiger trapped in a cage, begging to be freed. Against his better judgment, the Brahmin opens the cage — and the tiger immediately threatens to eat him, arguing that ingratitude is simply the way of the world. Desperate, the Brahmin insists they ask a neutral party to judge whether this is fair. One by one, they consult a tree, a buffalo, and a road, each of whom sides with the tiger, citing their own bitter experience of human ingratitude. Just as the Brahmin's chances look hopeless, a clever jackal arrives and pretends to be too foolish to understand the situation, asking the tiger to reenact exactly how it was trapped in the first place. The moment the tiger steps back into the cage to demonstrate, the jackal slams it shut — restoring justice through wit rather than force. This beloved tale, found across Indian and Middle Eastern folklore traditions, is ultimately a parable about the limits of gratitude, and how intelligence can outmaneuver raw power.

The sultan followed the fisherman to the lake to find out why the fish wouldn't cook. What he found instead was a prince who was half stone, trapped in a palace at the edge of an enchanted lake — and a story underneath the story he thought he was investigating.
