This week in honor of the #1 city at the time of recording (and because maybe she's homesick), Ariel's reading the (completely safe) Tale of the Bamboo Cutter (竹取物語), otherwise known as The Tale of Princess Kaguya (かぐや姫の物語).
The oldest manuscript for this story, which starts with an old man finding a three inch tall girl in a stalk of bamboo, is from the 15th century. The story itself, though, supposedly dates back as far as the 10th, and is considered the oldest known Japanese prose narrative.
This is one of the most well known Japanese fairytales, and while many translations and variants exist, the version read here is from Japanese Fairy Tales, compiled and published by Yei Theodora Ozaki in 1903, and found on Project Gutenberg.

An extra-long episode this week! Sorry about disappearing for a week there - work's been a little nuts and if I haven't been trying to meet deadlines I've been dead to the world.
This week we have a bunch of classics, at the request of a number of friends that are having a hard time right now: Stone Soup, an old short folktale about a man teaching people about sharing in hard times; Little Red Riding Hood, who really needs to learn about anesthetics; The Smith & the Devil, who you'd think was used to being lambasted by now; and The Little Mermaid, for whom things don't work out but she tries her best anyway.

The Emperor's New Clothes is pretty much what you've always heard - the Rose-elf, less known, is definitely a darker story.
