Faith Coffee Brewcast

In episode 3 of this season, I welcome to the Brewcast Tommy Airey, a retired high school teacher turned evangelical pastor turned ex-evangelical and justice seeker. He is the co-editor of RadicalDiscipleship.net, author of the book Descending Like a Dove: Adventures in Decolonizing Evangelical Christianity (available through your local bookstore). Tommy shares his story of faith maturation into a faith that goes beyond the conservative-liberal spectrum. In episode 2 of this season, I welcome to the Brewcast Khalil Rush'dan, convicted of murder, spent 15 1/2 years in prison, and was eventually exonerated. His journey has one few of us can identify with, but one needing to be shared. Since his release from prison in 2012, Khalil has been a tireless advocate for criminal legal reform and helped those being released from prison transition into society. He shares here his story and his spiritual awakening as a result. He is a board member of the Arizona Justice Project, which helped him be exonerated. He serves as the Social Justice Program Manager for Arizona Faith Network. And he helps those being released from prison as they transition back into society through Sage Counseling. He also serves our community in many other capacities, including serving on boards and volunteering his time for others.

Now in season 2, I welcome the Rev. Katie Sexton-Wood, executive director of Arizona Faith Network, “an interfaith organization dedicated to bringing people together to promote peace and understanding through interfaith education and dialogue as well as healing of the world through collaborative social action.” We talked back in the Spring, so you’ll hear some references to Lent and some other current events happening then. But her story is still compelling and needs to be heard. Rev. Katie is a dynamic influence in Arizona and an incredible person. I hope you enjoy learning her story.

In episode 9, I welcome the Rev. Dr. Jonathan Bobcat Malone (his nickname is not really Bobcat), pastor at First Baptist Church in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. Jonathan and I have known each other for about 19 years, after having met in our first calls as pastors in Dayton, Ohio. Jonathan has a wealth of wisdom to share about life and ministry, and is just an awesome guy to hang around. Yes, this is the same Jonathan who has almost killed me twice on backpacking trips, and I think we are now planning another one.

In episode 8, I welcome Mark Charles and Dr. Soong-Chan Rah, co-authors of the book Unsettling Truths: The Ongoing Dehumanizing Legacy of the Doctrine of Discovery, available at your local bookstore. Mark is a man of Navajo and Dutch American decent, a speaker and writer, and candidate for President of the United States in 2020. Soong-Chan is the Milton B. Engebretson Professor of Church Growth and Evangelism at North Park Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois. It was an honor and a serious education to speak with these two and read their book.

In episode 7, I welcome the Rev. Tim Shipe, clinical manager and CPE Educator at Harborview Medical Center, part of University of Washington Medicine in Seattle, Washington. He joins me in this episode to talk about the challenges of being a hospital chaplain and offering pastoral care in the midst of COVID...and meeting George Lucas.

In episode 6, I welcome the Rev. Gail Doering, a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the transitional presbytery executive of the Presbytery of Southern Kansas. She has served in various churches around the west coast as pastor, associate pastor, and interim pastor. She shares her well read wisdom and insights about the state of the church today.br /

In episode 5, I welcome the Rev. Dr. Andy Burnette, senior pastor at Valley Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Chandler, Arizona, and a good friend. He is a part of the post-graduate program at the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family, across from Georgetown University where Dr. Bowen practiced. He shares his transition from a pentecostal upbringing to the Nazarene Church to Unitarian Universalism as a Christian. In episode 4, I welcome the Rev. Bruce Reyes Chow, Presbyterian pastor, youngest moderator of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in 2008-2010 (218th General Assembly). He founded a church in San Francisco early in his career and spent several years serving as interim pastor. He is also a professional coach, avid podcaster, sought after speaker, and writer. He is the author of several books, including But I Don't See You as Asian: Creating Conversations About Race (2013) and 40 Days, 40 Prayers, 40 Words: Lenten Reflections for Everyday Life (2015). He has another book coming out October, 2020, In Defense of Kindness: Why It Matters, How It Changes Our Lives, and How It Can Save the World, which is available for pre-order now. In episode 3 we welcome the Rev. abby mohaupt. abby (who spells her name in all lower case) is a graduate of McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, where she also serves as an adjunct professor teaching vocation and discernment. She is a PhD student at Drew University in New Jersey studying ecofeminism, race theory, and embodied Pedagogy. If you’re curious about what those are, listen to the brewcast! abby is also the moderator of the Fossil Free PC(USA) movement to direct to the Presbyterian Church (USA) to divest from all fossil fuels in an effort to promote environmental care, and lives on a regenerative farm in Texas.
