  • God's Design for Parents, pt. 2 (Eph. 6:4)
11/13/11 - Shane Koehler - In the Scriptures, discipline is directly correlated to love.  Proverbs 3:11-12 says, "My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights."  In part 2 of our parenting message Pastor Koehler highlights the benefit of the rod of discipline in parenting noting from our passage in Ephesians that this rod of discipline is always coupled with instruction from God's word.  The aim of our discipline should not be to change outward behavior but should always be focused on the heart and the conscience.

  • God's Design for Parents, pt. 1 (Eph. 6:4)
11/6/11 - Shane Koehler - In a simple yet profound passage Ephesians 6:4 instructs parents to "not provoke their children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord."  In part one of this message on parenting, Pastor Koehler explains that not provoking our children to anger doesn't refer to one time outbursts of anger but rather avoiding attitudes and actions as parents that build within our children a resentment towards us.  He presents 12 ways that we are prone to do this and instructs from the Scriptures on how to avoid them.  The dominating theme is that we should treat our children with the same care, gentleness, grace, and forbearance that our heavenly Father shows to us.

  • God's Design for Children (Eph. 6:1-3)
10/30/11 - Shane Koehler - The biblical admonition for children to obey their parents is so clear but modern society continues to drift from this principle.  In this message, Pastor Koehler explains several key perspectives regarding the command to obey parents explaining that it extends to all people regardless of their age and the age of their parents, that it has traditionally been a universally accepted moral principle, that it is a clear biblical command that extends far beyond obeying individual requests from our parents, and that it leads to a path of blessing from God.  Ultimately God has designed the parent-child relationship as the primary training ground for children to learn the principle of submission to authority which is crucial for living a Spirit-filled life that is pleasing to God.

  • God's Design For Husbands, pt. 1 (Eph. 5:25-33)
10/16/11 - Shane Koehler - In Paul's instruction to husbands we see that the hallmark characteristic they will possess is spirit-filled love that is modeled after the love of Christ.  Instead of talking exclusively about leadership or protection we see that God's designs for husbands is found in an all encompassing, self-sacrificing, cherishing, and nurturing love that is an act of the will and is demonstrated for us in the way Christ loves the church.  Because of this a husband will never excel in loving his wife until he excels in understanding the Gospel of the love of our savior.  In this two-part sermon Pastor Koehler highlights eight distinguishing characteristics of Spirit filled love that husbands ought to be walking in.
