In this second message on biblical submission we see several other qualifiers that Paul gives to explain submission.  It is not universal: wives should not give greater honor to any other man and should give a unique honor and respect to their husbands.  It is a spiritual act for wives: the chief motivating factor should be love for Christ and not the worthiness of their husbands.  Since it is a spiritual act it begins on the inside and is a transformation of attitude before it's a transformation of actions.  It is complementary meaning that God has designed the marriage relationship for each partner to experience the greatest blessing when they focus on blessing one another through the roles God has given them.  It is comprehensive and encompasses every category of life.  And finally submission is accomplished by God's power as we walk in the Spirit.

9/18/2011 - Shane Koehler - In this discussion on biblical submission we see that submission is not in anyway unique to wives.  In Ephesians 5:25 Paul teaches that the Spirit-filled believer will be, "submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ," and our primary example of this is in the Godhead as the Son submits to the Father and the Spirit submits to the Father and the Son.  Furthermore, we see this submission plainly throughout the natural world as all people submit to their governments, employees submit to the employers, and so on.  Submission is therefore not demeaning in any way and Pastor Koehler explains how wives will find ultimate satisfaction and contentment in life when they fulfill their role as helpmate to their husbands.
