Today, Kingdom Advisors President Rob West talks with financial expert Ron Blue about that then it’s your calls at 800-525-7000. Ron Blue, is the founder of Kingdom Advisors and has written a shelfful of books about handling finances God’s way.

Ron Blue talks about his journey of becoming a financial advisor and how it has given him a front row seat to God’s work redemption and restoration in and through people's lives. And it even affected the next generation as they taught their children to hold money with an open hand, delighting in the possibilities of biblical financial stewardship.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

When you begin to follow God’s financial principles, you’ll have the opportunity to consider, decide, and stand firm on your own personal convictions about money. When we become men and women of conviction, led by faith, we also become salt and light in the world. Money is one of the most profound mechanisms by which we can reflect God’s glory on a darkened world.

A few rules to follow when beginning your journey with what the Bible says about money:

Spend less than you earn, otherwise your finances will be in shambles

Give generously

Avoid debt, the debtor is slave to the lender

Maintain financial margin, that means an emergency fund, and

Set long-term goals

Much of the book relates David’s experience while trekking in the Himalayas, but the story actually begins with the Platts wanting to bring a child into their family.That proved to be no easy trek itself.

The attempt to adopt failed, so a friend encouraged the Platts to travel to the region in which they were trying to adopt in order to experience first hand the plight of the lost in Asia.This region is the birthplace of Hinduism and Buddhism.Christianity is hardly found anywhere.Cholera is rampant.Half of children die before their 8th birthdays.There is widespread hunger, and sex trafficking is everywhere.

David Platt came away with the jarring reality that something needs to change for these people.They have tremendous physical needs: water, medical, and sanitation to name a few.But their spiritual needs are huge as well.

The Gospelhaspenetrated this remote and dark region. David tells of seeing tiny lights going up the trail.It was a two-hour hike in the freezing cold made by 50 people, including grandparents and babies, to attend a house church. After the service, the worshipers shared their needs with each other.What they still lack on the spiritual front, though, is strong Biblical teaching.

MoneyWise is a program about biblical financial principles and using the resources God entrusts to us wisely, according to His will. So Rob West asked how that can play a role in ending the suffering David witnessed first hand. Here are some suggestions:

With regard to the abject poverty in Asia and elsewhere, rethink your lifestyle and ask God what His priorities are for the resources He has entrusted to you.

If you’re the breadwinner of the house, you’ll want a term policy that covers your working years, usually with a death benefit 10 to 12 times your salary. The term of the policy should cover the years when children are still at home or away at school.

A stay-at-home parent needs a term policy to cover the cost of paying someone else to do what they do to care for their children, during the years when children need care at home.

A divorced parent would need a term policy if they’re making child support payments, in order to cover the years of child support and provide for the child.

You need life insurance if you cosigned a loan for someone or if someone cosigned a loan for you. The benefit should cover the cost of that debt, and a term policy is best as you can time it to end when the debt is paid off.

Someone with a mortgage would need a term policy because the death benefit would pay off the mortgage, so your family won’t have to move if you die.

Someone who’s made the maximum contributions to all of their qualified retirement plans, but still has money left to invest, could use a whole life policy because it builds value over time and can add to your retirement savings.

Individuals who haven’t saved for their funeral expenses could get a small whole life policy to cover it.

The parent of a special-needs child can benefit from whole life insurance because their child will need financial support after they die, and a whole life policy can provide for those needs without you having to worry about the term ending.

If you’re behind on your bills the last thing you want is to see a collection notice in the mail or get a call from a collector, but now they have even more ways to ruin your day.Recent rule changes now allow collection agencies to text and email you. And the new regs have consumer rights groups riled up. Financial planner and teacher Rob West has the details, then we take your calls and questions at 800-525-7000.

Proverbs 3:27 says,Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it. So as believers, we must always pay our debts, if not immediately, as soon as we can.

Debt collectors have a long history of harassing people for payment with constant phone calls and bogus threats about legal and even criminal action if they don’t pay. So, rules were put in place to prevent that type of harassment.

Those restrictions were put in place in 1977, when email and texting were only science fiction. So, for over a year, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has been grappling with how to incorporate modern communication into the regs that govern collection agencies.

The CFPB has simply decided to allow collectors to use, not just email and texting, but also social media and voice messaging even though a recent survey showed that 70-percent of Americans are against it.

The CFPB’s position is that by providing collectors with these new means to contact people, it will reduce the number of phone calls and snail mail messages they receive

Collection agencies by definition are third parties. That means your creditor sold your debt to an outside entity and that agency has the right to contact you for payment.

But with these rule changes, a person could get emails with links from unknown third parties that might be legitimate and might not be. Unfamiliar emails with links are often phishing attempts that could download malware to your computer.

And the FCC is now warning people about smishing attempts. These are harmful links in text messages. So there’s a lot to be concerned about with these new rules.

There is one bright spot in the new regs. The language specifically gives you the right to opt out of receiving those types of messages. But you have to make your request in writing, by snail mail, which is somewhat ironic.

And a collection agency must provide you with simple instructions for opting out of receiving any more emails or text messages.

Collectors are legally required to give you their name, the name of the original creditor, the amount owed, and to provide verification if you dispute the claim.

I sold my primary residence. I have a duplex that is on a line of credit. I owe about 200K on it. Should I use the money to pay off the line of credit, or make improvements on it?

How can I build up my short-term savings quickly?

I just retired from the military. I have a TSP and I don’t need the money now. I can manage my TSP myself, but should I pay 1% to an investor and let them do it for me?
