Parents naturally want the best for their children, to see them grow up into adults who are prepared for all the world throws at them. Teaching them to manage money wisely is truly a gift that keeps on giving. Proverbs 22 tells us, Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it. Our host Rob West is joined today by Compass: Finances God’s Way founder Howard Dayton to give us some pointers. Then it’s your calls and questions at 800-525-7000.
Become M-V-P parents. M stands for MODEL. Your kids need to see YOU handling money God’s way. What you DO will have by far the biggest impact whether it is your giving, or using a spending plan, or spending wisely, or working to get out of debt, or saving, or working hard all those will profoundly influence your children for the rest of their lives
The V in M-V-P stands for verbally communicating the appropriate financial truths from God’s word. Yes, they need to see us handling money God’s way, but they also need to hear that it’s based on the Bible.
The P stands for parents to provide Practical opportunities for them to apply what they’ve seen us do and heard us say. Naturally the opportunities need to be designed for their age.
Luke 16:10. It says:He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much. As children prove faithful with small responsibilities, they’re prepared to assume bigger ones.
As soon as children are ready for school, they should receive an income to manage. Parents need to decide whether the income must be earned or given as an allowance.
When young use a Simple system of three jars: Give, Save, and Spend. Children distribute a portion of their income into each jar. Even a child knows that when the jar’s empty, no more money to spend.
To teach children about investing, start as soon as children receive an income using the three jar system. Later, open a savings account in the child’s name. As they grow, teach them the benefits of compounding. Start them saving for a toy, then move on to longer term saving for a car education.
We have a responsibility to train children in the value and dignity of work. Consider these four areas in this training. 1) Learning routine responsibilities. 2) Expose your children to your work. 3) Earning extra money at home. 4) Working for others
