The year 2019saw tremendous gains in stocksportfolios are bulging with gains and there seems to be no end in sight to the decade-long bull market. But past performance is no guarantee of future results. So what should the prudent investor do in the uncertainty of this new year? Is recession just ahead? How will the presidential election affect the markets?
Today on MoneyWise, host Rob West gets the answers from investing expert Bob Doll. He’s the senior portfolio manager and the chief equity strategist at Nuveen Asset Management.
The first thing we see in 2020 is that the world avoids recession as U.S. GDP grows over 2% and global GDP grows over 3%. We don’t see indications that a recession is imminent.
We’ll see inflation and the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield ending the year above 2% as the Fed stays on hold through the presidential election.
Earnings will fall short of expectations this year. That will be driven to some extent by rising wage rates.
This year, stocks, bonds, and cash will all return less than 5% for only the fourth time in 25 years.
Financials, technology, and health care sectors will outperform utilities, real estate and consumer discretionary sectors in 2020.
Cold wars within the U.S. and between the U.S. and China continue.
The U.S. will conclude a tumultuous political year with a status quo election.
