The environment in which we live, the air we breathe, the food we eat … they all contain toxins that are harmful to our bodies, which lead to dysfunction, cancer and other health problems. Therefore, “detox” diets are popular these days. The idea is to flush these destructive toxins from our bodies in order to renew greater function.
Much like our bodies, our souls are also subject to toxic substances that lead to spiritual dysfunction. Anger, resentment, envy, pride, and much more, all make us spiritually unhealthy. “DETOX”, our devotion series and weekend teaching during the season of Lent, is all about reducing the impact of these “toxins” on our souls. Flushing the toxic influences will make us more “FIT” for the work God has given us to do at home, at work, at school, in the church, and in the community.
Today we’ll examine the evils of envy, which typically, blossoms into jealousy. The Bible is filled with examples: Genesis 4 (Cain and his brother Abel), Genesis 30 (Rachel and her sister Leah), 1 Samuel 18 (King Saul and David), Mark 15 (the chief priests and Jesus), and today’s lesson Genesis 37 (Joseph and his brothers.) In all these examples, envy is the flint that ignites evil in human hearts. “Envy is the daughter of pride, the author of murder and revenge, the perpetual tormenter of virtue. Envy is the filthy slime of the soul, a venom, a poison which consumes the flesh and dries up the bones. It rots us like cancer from the inside” (Socrates). May we learn how to recognize envy in all its forms and be “content in all things” like St. Paul.
