The environment in which we live, the air we breathe, the food we eat … they all contain toxins that are harmful to our bodies, which lead to dysfunction, cancer and other health problems. Therefore, “detox” diets are popular these days. The idea is to flush these destructive toxins from our bodies in order to renew greater function.
Much like our bodies, our souls are also subject to toxic substances that lead to spiritual dysfunction. Anger, resentment, envy, pride, and much more, all make us spiritually unhealthy. “DETOX”, our devotion series and weekend teaching during the season of Lent, is all about reducing the impact of these “toxins” on our souls. Flushing the toxic influences will make us more “FIT” for the work God has given us to do at home, at work, at school, in the church, and in the community.
Today we’ll examine the toxic effects of anger on our behavior. James, the brother of Jesus, encourages us to “be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires” (James 1:19b-20). Forgiveness, compassion, patience, and understanding are self-control methods that can extinguish the fire of anger. Whether we are a spewer or stewer, with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can successfully produce the righteousness that God expects.
