God has delivered Israel from Goliath and the Philistines by the hand of David—but it begins to dawn on Saul what that may mean. As all Israel and his own household fall in love with his new general, Saul fights against the Lord’s favor with secret plots. What will become of this jealous leader? How does God protect his people in the face of those who view gifted colleagues as a threat? Lord deliver us from this body of death!

In the next chapter of Genesis we find Isaac following his father’s footsteps, in both faith and failings. In the midst of the ups and downs, the schemings and scathings, we are yet reminded of the ordinary and often invisible workings of God’s ever-present care for his people. What will become of this son of the promise and the sons his wife has brought into the world?

What do sea monsters have to do with facing our giants, and what does a little brother have to do with either? Why do we tell stories out of order, and why should we pay attention to armor? Is Jesus to be found in a corner of the Old Testament so far removed from Matthew, or even Isaiah? Join us as we finally get into our discussion of 1 Samuel 17!

Today we embarked on the next section of Genesis, the "generations of Isaac." So little ink is devoted to this patriarch and yet there is much to be gleaned from this chapter. Abraham's life ends and the promise continues.

A king with a tormenting spirit, a court scrambling for an answer, a warrior who happens to be a smash lyre player, and a second introduction to Saul’s replacement. Join us as we consider the second half of 1 Samuel 16, along with some review and a consideration of the question: “Is the Lord opposed to monarchy?” Will we ever make it to David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17? The Lord has assured Abraham that “through Isaac shall your offspring be named,” yet Isaac is pushing forty and still a bachelor. What of the great nation to come? What of people like the sand of the shores and the stars of the heavens? In Genesis 24 Abraham sends his servant to secure a wife for Isaac. Will God prosper his endeavor? Will she be willing to come? What will happen to the promise? Thanks be to God, who assuages our own doubts and fears by showing us his consistent faithfulness to our fathers and mothers in the faith.

Tonight our focus shifts momentarily from the rejected king to the selection of his replacement.
