Pentecost means “fiftieth” — but it’s so much more than a date on the calendar.

On Sinai, God came down in fire, smoke, and thunder to give the Law... and 3,000 fell in judgment after the golden calf, Ex 19:16-19; Ex 32:28. Fifty days after Christ’s resurrection, God came down again in rushing wind and tongues of fire to write His law on hearts... and 3,000 were saved, Acts 2:41.

We’ll unpack:

1. The OT Feast of Weeks (Shavuot) — Lev 23:15-16. The giving of Torah.
2. The Day of Pentecost — Acts 2:1-4. The birth of the Church, a mystery hidden in the OT, Matt 16:18-19; Eph 3:1-6; Col 1:25-26.
3. The Church as the Bride of Christ — Eph 5:25-27; Rev 19:7.

Plus: The Seven Abundant Things God pours out in the Church Age — mercy for the lost, grace for the needy, pardon for the guilty, life for the dead, power for the weak, peace for the troubled, and joy for the sad, 1 Pet 1:3; 1 Tim 1:14; Isa 55:7; John 10:10; Eph 3:20; John 14:1; Phil 1:26.

From law written on stone to the Spirit written on hearts. From death at Sinai to life in the Spirit. This is Pentecost.

5. Trumpets — A wake-up call. Lev 23:23-25. Many see the Rapture here.
6. Day of Atonement — Israel mourns, the High Priest enters the Holy of Holies. Lev 23:26-32. Points to the Second Advent.
7. Tabernacles — God dwelling with His people. Lev 23:33. A picture of the Millennial Reign.

Fascinating timeline: Passover = Last Supper, Unleavened Bread = Crucifixion, Firstfruits = Resurrection, Pentecost = Spirit given. Colossians 2:16-17 says these feasts are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is Christ.
