April 16, 2017 Easter
"Early on the first days of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance." John 20:1
On Easter morning Mary believed that Jesus was dead and that He was going to stay dead.
If you've got doubts, this is the perfect place for you to be and today is the best day of the year to be in church.
"But the disciples did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense." Luke 24:11
Even the disciples did not expect a resurrection.
"Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away wondering to himself what had happened." Luke 24:12
The first century followers of Jesus documented their disbelief.
But weeks later, these same people poured into the streets of Jerusalem and their story wasn't Jesus lived. There story was Jesus lives!
Before the resurrection every believed that about Jesus. After the resurrection, after people saw a risen Savior, they went from believe that to trust in.
If you're going to believe anything about Jesus, then why wouldn't you believe the most important thing about Jesus?
His resurrection was a validation of who He claimed to be... the one and only Son of God who is your Savior.

Luke 22:44-49
darkness, the curtain, a centurion
The sins that stain our hands are washed in the blood that dripped from Jesus' nail-pierced hands.
Jesus removes the curtain and it won't get stitched back together.
The sins that stain our heart are sashed in the blood that stained the cross.
The centurion is transformed by the sacrifice of the cross.
"Father into your hands, I commit my spirit."
Jesus washes every sin with His blood.

"My house will be called a house of prayer but you are making it a den of robbers."
Jesus is referencing not the activity inside the temple but the mission outside the temple.
Jesus isn't upset about commerce, He's upset that it has eliminated the place for outsiders to worship.
The Church vs The Country Club
A country club exists to meet my social, financial, and emotional desires and if it doesn't, I find a new one or add another one.
A church exists to meet the deepest needs of everyone, not just those who are members.
Jesus intentionally uses His life to reach those who are on the fringes.
Romans 8:38
Jesus is greater than anything that keeps you on the outside.

Have you ever tried to bargain with God?
The same things that lead each of us to wanting to bargain with God can also very easily lead us to betray Jesus.
"Jesus, we have left everything to follow You, so what then will there be for ourselves?" Matthew 19:27
What's the benefit? What's the blessing for me?
John tells us that Judas wasn't interested in Jesus' agenda, just his own. He was thinking what's in this for me and how can I use Jesus for my advantage?
There was something that Judas wanted more than wanting what Jesus wanted.
When Judas couldn't get Jesus to do what he thought Jesus should do, he got fed up and sold Him. Judas traded away his relationship with Jesus.
Bartering is much easier than surrendering.
When we surrender, it's Jesus who takes responsibility for the outcome of the journey.

Little, common words are small, but important... like "I do."
How simple are these words, yet how hard the commitment.
Luke 22:39-46
We see Jesus' prayer summarized in one simple sentence: "not my will, but Yours be done."
We see the depth of Jesus struggle.
Simple words for us can lead us to struggles too.
We pray, and we cry, and in exhaustion, sometimes we simply... fall asleep.
The Garden of Gethsemane (Mount of Olives) was Jesus' usual place to play.
Jesus obeyed God's will and did it perfectly.
Jesus enters our places of sorrow and weakness and transforms them into places of His strength.

The church can be divided when Satan turns our blessings into things that cause us to fight.
Jesus had to remind His disciples that He is "among them as one who serves."
Here, in suffering and in service, is the greatness of God.
When Jesus entered our world, He didn't leave out as He found it.
