February 26, 2017 Who and Whose You Are
The one thing that has the potential to stop everything we've talked about is me.
If I'm really following Jesus, then there is more to following than just consuming.
v.29 "But what about you?" Jesus asked.
"Who do you say that I am?"
A consumer is in this for what they can get out of it.
Being a disciple means following somewhere that may not be where you want to go.
v.34 "Jesus said, If anyone would come after Me, they must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow Me."
Jesus is telling us that there will be times where what He want for you and what you want for you are different.
v35 "Whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel, will save it."
You just discovered that you consider your soul to be of greater value than all of your possessions, anyone you may date, any place you might go and any opportunity you might have.
Salvation is free, it costs us nothing.
Becoming a disciple of Jesus is eventually going to cost you something.
When you say "no" to you and "yes" to your Savior, you will discover something about yourself. Who and Whose you really are.

The paralytic is only healed by Jesus because somebody carried him to Jesus.
It's in the context of belonging that we find a community that will carry us to Jesus.
A place where people know you.
A place where you are really known.
A place where you experience family.
The paralytic is healed and forgiven.
God's strategy for reaching those who are far from God is connected to your faith.
What is the message that we want people to believe?
Grace is central.
The Bible is Truth.
Love is how God created us to live.
When we receive God's grace, we become worshippers in all areas of our life.

What is a disciple?
A learner, a pupil, an apprentice.
A person who says, "I'm trying to make a decision, so how would you handle this?"
"by this everyone will know you are my disciples, if you love one another." John 13:5
When you look at how Jesus loved it's not always simple.
If you try to resolve the tension that exists around loving people the way Jesus loved, you lose.
v.14 "We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."
Truth says you're accountable. Grace says you're forgiven.
Jesus was Grace and Truth in a body.
If we want to understand what Jesus meant when He said "love one another" then we have to watch how Jesus loved.
If Jesus is the embodiment of Grace and Truth and we're His body, then that also means we are the best expression of Jesus that anyone will ever know.
What would truth has me say?
What would grace have me do?

John 4:1-26
Jesus crosses barriers that would have caused great concern.
Jesus gives what no one else can give.
Jesus gives this gift to someone no one would expect.
What barriers does Jesus want you to cross in order to invite someone to belong?
The person most in need of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience is often the person we could least imagine sitting next to us in church.

1. Extend an invitation.
2. Prepare for guests.
3. Help guests become family.

As people who say that we believe in Jesus, what are we becoming?
There is a tendency in all of us toward rule keeping and away from relationship building.
It can be very easy to confuse discipline with discipleship.
It is much easier to check things off a list than it is to love people.
v.12 "Therefore as God's chosen people, Holy and dearly loved, cover yourselves..."
Compassion: Being able to display that we feel what other people are going through.
Kindness: Loaning your strength to someone else.
Humility: Seeing me as God sees me.
Gentleness: Responding to someone else in light of their strengths and weaknesses, instead of simply my strength.
Patience: The decision to move at the pace of another person.
Jesus came into our lives to make a difference and, as people who have been saved by Jesus, we have been called to do the same thing.
Just as Jesus' love has made a difference in you, Jesus love will also make a difference through you.

"it is God's kindness which is intended to lead you to repentance." Romans 2:4
All of us naturally gravitate to the people and places where we feel loved, accepted, and wanted. Where we feel we belong.
A relationship with Jesus always begins with information and hearing the Word of God because real faith is built on Truth.
Believing begins by hearing God's Word.
What was at stake was whether or not Peter thought he could believe Jesus.
"Simon answered, 'Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because You say so."
"when they had done so..." They believed and they acted on that belief.
"Simon Peter said, 'Go away from me Lord, I am a sinful man!"
Peter saw who Jesus was and he saw who he was. This was the beginning of Peter's relationship with Jesus.
We can all find ourselves in the story.

Jesus has invited us into a relationship based on belonging... not behavior.
There is an insecurity, an emptiness, in each of us that goes to the very core of our souls which no thing, no accomplishment, no acquisition can ever fully heal.
"but when the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law to redeem those under law" Galatians 4:4
To redeem means to buy back or win back.
v.5 "God sent His Son, to redeem... that we might receive adoption."
v.6 "Because you are sons (and daughters) God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, 'Abba, Father' "
Love and rejection are two of the most powerful emotions we ever experience and love wins over rejection every single time.
And now God calls us to do the very same thing in the life of someone else.
